Hi, everyone, I have been gifted permission by the admin’s (a long time ago, to be fair) to allow me to give you all a heads-up about my new comic fantasy trilogy called Pickled Magic. It is finally for sale worldwide on the Amazon platform; just search for Pickled Magic by Richard J. Watts and I’ll be there to welcome you and put the kettle on. The books are available for Kindle and also in paperback.

If, like me, you adore Sir Terry Pratchett’s Discworld stories and dearly miss reading new novels in this unique genre then I know you are going to absolutely fall in love with this new and very original series of books. They are perhaps a little naughtier than STP’s in places, possibly a shade crazier and with a touch of iron(y) and steel woven into its comedic comfort blanket. They are also my own small tribute to Sir Terry, my personal literary deity.

Here is a (fairly long) precis of what the story is about:

Walter Farmfound is an unlikely wizard’s apprentice who is driven by a desperate need to become a fully-fledged wizard. His deepest wish is to finally unlock his singular and unique Wild Magic, which is an unstoppable force of nature, completely crazy and utterly unwilling to be manipulated; at least not without first being taken out for an expensive candle-lit dinner. When his magic is unleashed Walter is convinced he will then be able to set right the wrongs of his past and at last be capable of making everyone pay for all their painful years of unsought-for . . . attentions. Because who messes with a proper wizard, right? Particularly one who can successfully waggle a wand, despite the fact that his Master, Senior Wizard Marlyn, refuses to allow even a warped matchstick to be brought into the Wizards Keep.

Unfortunately, the only time Walter is able to access his all-powerful and untameable Wild Magic is when he is completely inebriated – pickled even – and therefore without any of those pesky, magic-restraining inhibitions; and quite possibly a single functioning brain cell, so what could possibly go wrong? Regrettably, Walter’s dreadful step-father has unknowingly caused the apprentice to avoid anything alcoholic, which proves to be a more serious problem than at first glance, since the singular potion that could potentially release Walter’s magic, and his dreams, is over ninety-eight percent proof.

The Pickled Magic Trilogy is a hilarious, Pratchett-esque rollercoaster of a journey of comic discovery, magic, naughtiness and jokes as Walter’s quest takes him ever-nearer to the ultimate power in the magical world of Allyssion, and perhaps to a little personal peace of his own; and yet this story is about so, so much more than something as mundane as payback.

Walter’s tale begins at a gentle pace in Wizards and Dragons, setting out his early life – and his occasionally bumpy background – before the sparkling rollercoaster of magic and mayhem truly takes off. The pace and the laughs as the story unfolds will envelope the reader in an ever-increasing torrent of unexpected twists and turns of wild, Wild Magic and even wilder characters.

The trilogy leaps forward as Walter and his disparate band of companions set out on their journey in the second book, Witches and Quests, since the best, the funniest and the wackiest part of the series is about to unfold.

Wizards, witches, a Wild Magic that knows no bounds, a pair of decadent Royal Twins that appear to have no boundaries, centaurs, trolls, Hellves and the possibility of war . . . what more does a funny fantasy novel require?

How about a guaranteed giggle on every page, an unbounded quantity of refreshing, mischievous originality, a centuries-dead sorcerer, a vengeful dragon, an enigmatic teacher, a crazy quest, an even crazier duck, and chrysanthemums. But no wands, definitely no wands!

Book One is called Pickled Magic: Wizards and Dragons.
Book Two is entitled Pickled Magic: Witches and Quests.
Book Three is called Pickled Magic: Sorcerers and Demons, and is very nearly double the length of any book in this genre. I will add that it is also my personal favourite of the three.

If anyone wishes to contact me, I will be happy to reply to messages; as long as they are nice ones and not demanding money, or perhaps a sample of my Wall Guards’ mind-altering rolling tobacco.

I am currently working on my own webpage where people in the UK will eventually be able to purchase all the books directly from myself and, for a short time, signed and dedicated if requested.

A sincere thank you to all those who have managed to get this far without falling asleep at their keyboard and stamping QWERTY across their foreheads.
