In my charity shop I was given a book to throw to the book mashing people (horrors). It was in Scandawegia so I got given it. I know it is Norwegian, the book is silk lined and the silk lining inside is pristine but the pages have the occasional damp spots. Then I had to decide what it was about:
Three clues:
1897
Norwegian
Picture of ship on front
There was a lovely plate photgraph of a boat crew and I am placing the names to the crew and get to the Captain.......Amundson! Turns out it is the story of the Norwegian race to the pole. "Or Fram over polhavet!" Travel; over the polar land (I think, 'cos I do not have a large dictionary).
Spent two lovely hours trasnslating the introduction paragraph. It says how pleased they were to get to the pole first but regret the sorrow that they felt on beating Scott.
I now posess this book, try prising it away with your cold dead hands...... and I intend to spend some time with a better Norwegian dictionary so I can read it.
Could be a long job.
