The novel, by Phil and Kaja Foglio. 4th one in the series.
I've had it for a couple of years, finally read it. It's another solid entry in the Girl Genius text-only form from Night Shade Books, available in both hardcover and trade paperback.
Packed with action and fill-ins of subtle motivation. Layers of intrigue on all sides that may not have been clear in the online form.
For those who don't already know, Girl Genius is a PG-13 gaslamp fantasy series that has been running online for free over the past few decades, with updates three times a week. The online story is a comic, drawn by Phil and, I believe, plotted by both the Foglios. The text format is behind in the storyline, but manages to condense years of artwork into chapters of text. Nothing of the story is lost (though there are filler episodes online that have so far not appeared in text format).
The comic form is in print. The novels are in print.
Read the books. Read the comics.
