Brightonomicon is one of my favourite Rankin books.

I've got the Audio CDs. Sadly they left out a lot of the funniest bits, because they're only really funny if you read them - Fangio's multiple hat changes.

David Warner plays Rune in the CDs. Marvellous voice, perfectly suited to the part, but physically he's a beanpole and Hugo is extremely round!

I heard it recently on Radio 7 - very good

Isn't David Warner a little on the short side for Hugo Rune as well?

A short list, meaning those authors which have risen above the very many others I have read.

Michael Moorcock (the Jerry Cornelius books, rather than the sword and fantasy)
Robert Rankin (I am, originally, a Hounslow lad)
Kurt Vonnegut (I am surprised there is no prior mentions)
Stephan King (short stories and the gunslinger books, and The Green Mile - most of his other "horror" does not work for me)
Spike Milligan (his war diaries particularly)
Harlen Ellison (another one not previously noted? And American, too..,)
Douglas Adams (why the f*ck he could not have been blessed with PTerry's work ethic?)
John Le Carre (the George Smiley/Circus books in particular)

Hmmm... No women.

Didn't he write some fantasy/mysteries? Kind of like PTerry's watch books without the comedy? I quite liked those.

I can't say the same about his 'Secret History' books, though, I'm afraid. Crass, predictable, unfunny and plain stupid. :(
