I hope it's better than the film HHGTTG.

Oh, that was dire, wasn't it?

There were a couple of good bits in it but overall pretty crap.

Nothing can beat the BBC version, IMHO.
I think that part of the reason why the movie has split opinion (other than the romance subplot) is because it diverged significantly from the original, but please remember before you bag it that virtually everything changed or new in it was actually done by Douglas Adams before he died. One of the executive producers, Robbie Stamp, says:

The script we shot was very much based on the last draft that Douglas wrote....All the substantive new ideas in the movie...are brand new Douglas ideas written especially for the movie by him....Douglas was always up for reinventing HHGG in each of its different incarnations and he knew that working harder on some character development and some of the key relationships was an integral part of turning HHGG into a movie.
I felt that the TV version was really a better realisation of the original radio series. I think that both the TV show and the movie have good merits.

Watched Dirk Gently last night. It was... well, the best I can say is 'not completely terrible'. The character is right (although physically very different from how I'd always imagined him - which is to say, like Douglas Adams in a long coat and silly hat), but the wild invention is missing. Without D.A.'s input, I fear it might never amount to anything more (assuming it becomes a fully fledged series) than a sci-fi tinged, poor man's Jonathan Creek, which is a crying shame, since the character has so much potential.

That's one of the BBC adaptations I was looking forward to that I've ended up a touch disappointed with, now to see what happens with the latest version of Whistle and I'll Come to You, showing on Christmas Eve. Surely John Hurt in arguably James' greatest (and most filmable) story can't go wrong, can it?

I enjoyed the show terribly. Even though it was so vastly different from the book. And here I am going to make a hugely controversial statement....I prefer the Dirk Gently books to the Hitchhiker series. Horrid blasphemy I know..bite me.

I haven't read the 1st DG book but I loved Long Dark Tea-time of the Soul and thought it was far better than the later H2G2T2 books.

I agree that the TV version didn't follow exactly what we expected (as in I was expecting someone taller and hunkier - well plump ;) ) but Stephen Mangan's a decent comedy actor and as I hadn't read the 1st book he was pretty good except in the body shape dept which really isn't that important for me in adaptations (well mostly - Viggo Mortenson's not craggy enough to be Aragorn and that's that - I don't care how great a swordsman he is, Strider's not supposed to be pretty! :p )

Anyway - it wasn't uproariously funny but it was a good cast who made me laugh in the right places
