I have NO idea why they want to make AU before any of a number of ther better DW books.
World Cup next year?
No! Pterry does not like football, it was more about the mentality of fans/mobs in games off that ilk.
I know that, you know that we all know that... But do you think SkyOne cares?

For commercial reasons, rather than fan reasons, most likely. UA requires the least amount of knowledge of the DW milleau among non-initiates. The main characters are "new" the series, the wizards don't require a huge amount of back story, Vetinari's role can covered with two lines of expository dialogue, and you could get rid of Vimes' and DeWorde's cameos without losing too much of the main story.

Add the more universal "football" and "underclass" themes and the ongoing post-LOTR popularity of orcs, goblins and other similar beasties, and it's got broad potential. Not necessarily the book I'd choose, but I can see why Sky would choose it.

The remaining prob with orcs and goblins (again something that spoiled UA for me): There are quite a good number of people who will (and did) go 'what's the big deal?' as the image they had/prefered of those two races is the one from the warcraft-verse.
Which means
Orcs: Proud Warrior Race with heart and mind at the right place in most cases now
Goblins: A race of little CMOT Dibblers

I don't no anything about Warcraft other than it's a game I don't want to get sucked into. My orcs and goblins are LOTR or Final Fantasy inspired in my head.

5th Elephant would be a fantastic choice, agreed. Thud, too.

I wonder if producers could get their head around the idea that Pratchett's books aren't just comedy, though.
I'd hate any of his thoughtful (yet funny - some people seem to have a problem with the idea) novels to be reduced to fantasy slapstick.

I'd see Reaper Man as a big budget movie. It's got the calm moments with Bill Door opposed to frantic running around with the undead gang in the mall. Plus an epic conclusion with Death fighting New Death (now with extra flavour). Fairly stand-alone too.

Guards! Guards!

Or at least Equal Rites, as an introduction to Granny Weatherwax, or Wyrd Sisters as an introduction to Lancre.
Reason for these:
All these could benefit from good special effects, and we would like a story without Rincewind looking a hundred years older than he really is. Did they follow Kirby's (inaccurate) interpretation?
I like Death, and so does Sky, so Reaper Man may be a good one.

Guards! Guards! may be tricky if produced by Sky because in GP they showed Angua as a watchman and her disappearing would be strange.
But the story is humorous and quite easy to understand in comparison with other watch books. And DRAGOOOONS!!!
I can imagine some awesome music playing as Errol launches from the penhouse.
Doooooo..... Dooooo.... doooooo...... DOOOOODOOOOOOO!!!!!
boom boom boom boom boom boom boom

Great characters as well.

Equal Rites and Wyrd Sisters would introduce the world to Granny Weatherwax, and would make great films because of the adventure sense in Equal Rites and the parodic comedy of Wyrd sisters, which the audience would link with Macbeth.

I'd love to see Pyramids as a film... or Small Gods.. but that would then spark sooooo much religion talk....so Pyamids would be best :))))

^ Good CGI costs a bloody fortune though. You just need to watch a SyFy original movie to see what travesties cheap CGI produces.

To be honest, I'm not sure if Discworld is suited to film. A lot of the magic is in Terry's prose rather than the plots or dialogue (not that they're bad of course). Certainly I don't think literal interpretations will work - The Colour of Magic TV Movie suffered from trying to get Terry's dialogue to work as it was on film and failed - the "In Sewer Ants" and "Sue my face for slander" lines were just painful despite being hilarious in written form. I actually think the best adaptions were the two 90s Discworld games. They upped the silliness and wackiness a lot, but they were actually amusing where all the Sky TV Movies weren't. Get whoever wrote them to pen the next Discworld adaption I say!

Maybe because I have just reread it.... Witches Abroad.

It suits the money making formula alot of "kids movies" have these days of entertaining the kidlets immensely with the fairytale references they would pick up on, and it would amuse the adults with all the jokes that would go completely over the kids heads.

And the wider audience a movie has the more money it gets given to be made.
