Hello,
I recently bought the City Watch book collection from Amazon, they arrived today and I found that on the back of each book near the bottom was a number, I assumed that these were representing the order that they were published in the whole collection and the all corresponded with a list on Wikipedia. All except Thud! which according to all lists I could find was the 34th book published, but clearly shows a number 1 on the back.
I would be very grateful if anybody could enlighten me to why this is,

Thanks

Hi dmb and welcome!

I'm afraid I don't have any of the black covers and therefore these numbers are news to me. But I know quite a few members here have them and may be able to help.

I have all of the currently available black covers, they're all numbered in order of publishing up until "Thief of Time" and after that the backs are blank where the numbers should be. I just checked and my copy of "Thud!" definitely doesn't have any number printed on it.

As to why yours has a 1 on it I could make a guess at a printing error, the copies for the city watch collection were probably printed and bound especially for it rather than taken individually and sold together out of the current stock of black cover editions. I'd imagine that this is something unique to that collection.

They put the number one on the back of the cover due to it winning the Discworld World Cup, so I am led to believe.
