Hello Everyone!

It's my first post on the forum and I'm really glad to join!
I'd to get an advice from you guys. As the topic states, I'm writing a diploma work about equality presented in T. Pratchett's works, my question to you is; What books should I check to get the best view of the case. The most important matter for me is sex, race and eventually ethnicity, although my topic is not stated and closed yet so any good ideas would help. I also need some refferences to the books outside of Pratchett's works, like articles or criticism of his books, if anyone would happen to know where to look, I would be really greatful!

Hellooo and welcome Shinpu.

I would recommend reading Feet of Clay, which covers pretty much the whole topic you're asking about. Good luck with the diploma and enjoy what is a very good read (one of my favourites, btw). Let us know how you get on.

Hi, ShinPu! Welcome to the site!

As Penfold said, FOC covers this topic in spades. You may also want to check out Monstrous Regiment, which deals explicitly with gender equality (and inequality) in a multi-species setting.

Equal Rites also covers this same theme, but I don't think it's nearly as good or as deep as Pterry's later examinations of gender and racial oppression.

You may also read his most latest book, Snuff, which explores the issue of ethnic cleansing on a pretty graphic scale.

And there's Carpe Jugulam that explores a similar vein ( :p ) on the 'speciesist' front with 'new wave' vampires starting to farm their bloodstock on a 'social arrangement' basis. Small Gods is also relevent on the belief/religion front again with social manipulation at local and international level with a manufactured jihad. Interesting Times also touches on the class struggle and the ethics of feudal values 8)

You're spoiled for choice in fact Shinpu - lots of avenues to follow up ;)

Aslo worth a look is Unseen Academicals which deals with fans or the mentalityof a pack of supporters for a team brand.

Plus it might be worth checking out, The Folklore of Discworld by Jacqueline Simpson for additional information.

There are two other books which you should check out which may give you a futher insight: Terry Pratchett: Guilty of Literature and Guilty of Literature Second Edition, which is an expanded & revised edition of the previous 2001 edition, the latter was published in 2004 both are edited by Andrew M. Butler, Edward James and Farah Mendlesohn

So that should keep you busy for a while Shinpu. :)

Wait... are you being forced to do Terry Pratchett books or have you vhosen them yourself?

Please tell me you chose it yourself... if young students or kids HAVE to do something they will not enjoy it and soon everyone will hate Pratchett D:

Well, I have to dissapoint you. I'm a third year student of english philology. As stated in the topic, it's my diploma work (something similar to a BA Thesis) after that I am basically a teacher of english.

So answering your question :p I chose this topic myself
