Really? I don't have a pinterest account and I can read the guides linked above without any issue.

Might depend on the browser version you're using or OS.

Ahh I see. If you click on one of the images to zoom in, it prompts you to login/join Pinterest. But if you hit "Esc" at that point, you can still see the big image - so it doesn't /force/ you to join or log in, it just prompts you to do so.
