I was rereading Feet of Clay and suddenly the voice of Nobbs morphed in my head into Baldrick from Blackadder - I can also see Judy Dench as a fine Granny Weatherwax with Victoria Wood as Nanny Ogg

Who would be your dream cast for any of the Discworld characters?

Brian Blessed as Ridcully ;)
:text-yeahthat: hands down.

And I'm all for getting the young man who played Rincewind in the fanfilm for that very role again.

I always saw Maggie Smith as Granny. Her expressions of haughtiness and effrontery are second to none  I quite liked David Jason as Albert, I think Baldrick is too gormless and dim. Agree with Brian Blessed.

I think all the suggestions have good points but I would like to throw in another couple in for the witches.

June Brown as Granny Weatherwax. I know she is now a regular in East Enders (A tv soap here in the UK) but, despite this, her acting is really very good *ducks from the stones thrown by East Enders fans* (she was also Nanny Slagg in Gormenghast).

Miriam Margolyes as Nanny Ogg. She was in a couple of the Harry Potter films but don't let that put you off. I have seen her on a tv chat show and I thought she was so made for the part. (See the abbreviated clip here if you want a giggle)

Definitely agree with Brian Blessed for Ridcully though!

I have to say I never saw Nobbs as being full of gorm ... I never took to David Jason as Albert either but in his younger days he would have made a great CMOT Dibbler

Robby Coltrane as Fred Colon?

Brian Blessed as Ridcully, yes, that's a given, but didn't Ridcully have a brother who was high priest of Blind IO? John Cleese perhaps?

Phillip Glenister as Vimes?

Chloe Moretz as Tiffany Aching?

Robert Carlisle as Moist von Lipwig?

There just has to be a place for Benedict Cumberbatch somewhere. If only he was a bit older I could see him as Vetinari.

MongoGutman, I like Robbie Coltrane for Fred! But I'm not sure about Robert Carlisle for Moist - I always see Moist as having one of those inoffensively handsome but fairly forgettable faces - Craig Parker, maybe.

Carlisle as Rincewind, now that I could see. He does put-upon, harried and persecuted so well!

What about John Hannah for Lord Downey? He's got a great contemptuous sneer!

My William de Worde would be Lawrence Fox. He's so tall, but he has this habit of hunching his shoulders and folding in on himself. I could see William being like that.

Definitely agree 100% with Miriam Margolyes as Nanny. She's got the right personality. Phillip Glenister would make a very good Vimes.

He may be too young but the only real life person that I imagine as Vetinari is Mark Strong. I think he'd be amazing.
He's got alot going on behind the eyes. I like him.

I have a bad habit of picturing discworld characters to be almost the opposite sizes to to what they are, ie Fred has a small belly, but is over all quite skinny. Throat is fat. Nanny is thin, Christine and Agnes (maskerade) are reversed. And munstrum looks like my master of the senior school, short thin and Irish. (these are the most outstanding examples
Therefore:

Vimes: Hugh Jackman
Throat: stephen fry
Granny: Julie Andrews...
Vernance: possibly Hugh grant...
Margat: Reese Witherspoon
Moist: Richard coyle is good

I think thats about it...
