What are the puns and references you completely missed first time around (or for years)? I've JUST now got that D'regs = dregs, which let's face it is not a MENSA-level test of brilliance. Anyone else?

I had one of these moments this morning. o_O

On the CA board someone asked if there were any ships or boats 'named' in the DW books. One of the ones I came up with was the Milka, the ship that Vimes commandeers in Jingo. I said that the name was odd and that I thought there was probably a joke in there somewhere.

Another member pointed out that Christopher Columbus sailed in three ships, the Santa Maria, the Nina and the Pinta.

Years ago in Britain there was an advertising campaign for milk that used the slogan: Drinka Pinta Milka Day.

So obvious once it was pointed out.

Welcome to the site, niaje!

I was watching an episode of QI recently and they were talking about the educationalist and writer, Christopher Frayling whose coat of arms bears the Latin moto: "Perge Scelus Mihi Diem Perficias (Proceed, varlet, and let the day be rendered perfect for my benefit! or Go ahead, punk, make my day!)".

'Love in a canoe' flavour coffee (from Guards! Guards!) took me about five years to get, and then only after a friend explained it to me. I now use the phrase to describe weak coffee when served it in a café or restaurant.
I got that one pretty quickly as I'd heard it before.

Not Discworld, but a similar style. It took me too long (over a decade if not two, in fact, as I only got this earlier this year) to get the joke in this bit of dialogue from The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and according to TV Tropes, I'm far from the only one...

"...No, don't move," [Ford] added as Arthur began to uncurl himself, "you'd better be prepared for the jump into hyperspace. It's unpleasantly like being drunk."
"What's so unpleasant about being drunk?"
"You ask a glass of water."

 Really? That was one I never had problems with.
Well, I was glad when I looked up the 'Fridge' section (for things that either bother you, delight you, or horrify you a long time after you've read or watched a work) on TV Tropes and saw that it took others a long time to get the joke.
