Folks this is what happens when typographers get together!

Here's the first one I did Cheery -

Ignoring the message altogether, I think the bottom line works best in this first one, 'cos it's short and mostly covers the lighter central background so it's not as dominant over Terry's name as much as the later two (which go across the darker background at either end of the image - which in turn makes them look lighter than the Terry Pratchett when really they're exactly the same sampled colours).

I take your point about the lower case readability but I do have a horror of throwing too many different type styles together and the spacing of Terry's name, for now, I can't play with, as the base image isn't layered and so can't be moved around yet (hopefully Lyndsey may be able to get me a vector file and I can work on the spacing and contrasts more flexibly or I can 'lift' the title onto the background which takes time). For us the web address is important and it'll go on the back as well... ;)

... which has just given me another idea for the straplines which maybe don't need to be on the front at all so we can de-clutter altogether  Guys we won't have a poll - anyone who can think up a catchy one-liner we can do them on the back like critic quotes - so something like this

The fantasy forum with added turtle...
Jan Van Quirm - member since Nov 2008

The Discworld forum where everyone knows how to pronounce OOK...
Granny Weatherwax - member since Oct 2009

etc

Thanks for the salient points Cheery - will work on that quote idea (and the other task) over the weekend ;)
That certainly is the case! (I was just trying to use my knowledge of half a year's apprenticeship, see if I could start a discussion ;) We keep doing it in school: 17 typographers, 17 opinions. We go on for hours)
Sorry, I didn't see the first one  Yes, it does work out the best. I see what you mean.
You know, critisizing someone else's work is a lot easier than doing it yourself  I couldn't have done it better!
And the idea with the qotes on the back is great
How about this one:
"if you think the Ministry of Loonies (or silly walks?) is crazy, you haven't seen the Terry Pratchett forum"

"The Amazing Forum and its educated posters"

Why don't you put on the back;

"Welcome from" then a list of names.
Because without the quotes (v.g one BTW) they're just names - doing the quotes says something about the site and who's using it. An info bite on what to expect and how lively/interesting the people are if you want marketing babble ;)

Ho kay

New straplineless front side of the bookmark -

And now the back of the bookmark plus one of the 'quotes' from each of the people who've posted them so far. I used the ones I thought worked best (space being one of the criteria and leaving some room for additional ones to come in perhaps). Both images are probably slightly smaller and less distinct than what I'd use for the print versions. Anyway, this is what it looks like so far -

PS - I know I got some of the joining dates wrong - will make sure they're corrected for the proper thing. Do tell me if you spot any glaring errors as it's hard trying to self-proof ;)

Update for everyone as I've heard from the convention organisers - here's what they had to say

Hi Jan,
Sorry this took a while but I've only just started co ordinating the
volunteers and have been a bit swamped over the past month.

Transworld will be at the event but I'm not sure if they have any plans
to promote anything beyond the books.

The whole event originated in online fandom - it was started by a group
from alt.fan.pratchett which was the dominant online fandom group at the
time. Since then many more have appeared and are represented at the
event in the form of get togethers or simple socialising. There is
usually a panel of some sort based on online fandom, changing faces of
fandom etc. It would make sense for the Transworld hosted forums to be
involved in that along with the others. I think there is a fair overlap
of people from the different forums, enough to cooperate in events.

Do you know yourself how many of your members are attending the event in total now? It may be more than you realise and its worth asking on the event mail list.

One of the regular programme items is the 'Hedgehog party' which is
traditionally hosted by afpers but open to all to come along. Typically
its audience are a mix of the online groups. The Stamp Forum also have
get togethers and it would be worth joining them also.

The other suggestion I'd have is that if you have leaflets or similar I
am happy to put them on the registration desk with the other event/group
leaflets. You could also write something for the online Chronicle at
the event - possibly a report of a get together framing some information
about the group?

Let me know what you think would work,

regards,
Karen/hypatia

Potentially that means we'll not have to do much on the day aside from hob-nob with other forums and there's a general pickup area for leaflets so we can spread cover of that side. ;)

So a question -
As far as I know we have Dotsie, pooh, WWD, Beth, Keith_art, Granny Weatherwax (from Oz) & Sjoerd going to be there - anyone else out there who signed up earlier or since that would like to get involved?

I'll get back in touch with Lynsey at Transworld with the draft design and discuss the bookmark - how to distribute it etc (can they put it in the conference goodie bag for instance).

Does anyone want to do some copy for a leaflet too? I can do the tarting up with similar stuff to the book mark and the handiest format for that would be both sides of A4 and either an A5 size (singlefold) or long skinny concertina format (2-fold A4), so it needn't be too much writing involved. I would do this but I've got tons of work on atm so I'm sure someone else can do a better job of it.

Or do any of you have any other ideas?
