Um...er...we are talking about people on this forum, aren't we? :naughty:
I'm just making a point about that word, 'foolproof'. Okay, you said idiot proof, but it's the same word.

I mangled a quote by Douglas Adams, actually.

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

This may be a moot point but as the submission deadline is still open there could be some pieces coming in that won't go through the secret vote stage at all?

If there aren't any late entries then it's fine as it is - if there are then would those have an advantage of some description? o_O

  OK, so it's not idiot proof if another entry comes in.
If another entry comes in and it gets in a tie with any story, then "vote-difference" will NOT be used.

But that probably won't happen, unless a viking-related one comes in.

49 The Vikings' Day Trip

Olaf Olaf the Red stepped ashore from his longboat on to the sun-kissed beach of Ye Olde Greate Britaine.
He was followed by his son, Olaf Olafson and HIS son Olaf Olafsonson.
The former was too old for raping, and the latter too young, so while Olaf Olafson was raping the wimmin, Olaf Olaf tried his hand at pillaging, but unfortunately his back was giving him some gyp. Olaf Olafsonson stayed on the beach making sandcastles.

After spending their Viking Euros at the Metro Centre buying Dr Scholl sandals, plastic watering-cans and Pokemon cards, they buggered off back to Norway.

so... 14 people have entered the competition but only 7 people have voted? Thats a disgrace - those who refused to vote should be kicked off the team and never play for Liverpool again.
That is probably the worst piece of adding up I've seen this year, Mongo.
By my reckoning, 12 people have voted so far.

Does that mean that if no one else votes, the people who have voted can vote again???
Oops! I meant 10 votes! ... I could use the excuse that I was typing with the light off, but the truth is that I just made a mistake!

Re: story 49. If pooh wrote it, then it cannot be allowed to stand! Unless there has been another rule change ...

Oh dear! It's yet another voting system change

It looks like 16 stories are getting the boot in the qualifying round, leaving 32.

The original idea was for 4 groups of 8 stories, with two stories qualifying from each group, leaving 8. :naughty:

However, this would get rid of 24 stories in one fell swoop, dashing the hopes of a lot of people and spoiling a lot of the fun.
It would also be very difficult to pick two stories out of a group of 8. o_O

So in order to make this competition more fun, I propose 8 groups of 4 stories, the top two going through from each group.
This would then get rid rid of another 16 stories (instead of 24) and everybody's stories would have a better chance of qualifying to the last 16.

Winner group A v Runner-up group H
Winner group B v Runner-up group G
Winner group C v Runner-up group F
Winner group D v Runner-up group E
Winner group E v Runner-up group D
Winner group F v Runner-up group C
Winner group G v Runner-up group B
Winner group H v Runner-up group A

The following round would be a random draw.

(I'm just making this up as I go along, can you tell? )

I'm afraid I rather forgot to vote Pooh, sorry. Though it's nice to know my story can more or less hold it's own without my help, what's happening now then? The new voting system looks pretty good.

When are you drawing up the groups?

There has been one person against the new voting system and two for it. So we're going with 8 groups of 4 stories.

The stories have been put into groups according to the votes received in the Qualifying round, alternately using most votes first, then chronological order second (feel free to check if you want  ).

Choose two stories from each group. Your first pick gets 2 points, your second pick gets one point.

Tied stories are decided on "vote-difference" from the qualifying round.

Post your votes on this thread.

Voting finishes at 10:00pm Feb 19.

Yeah. Can't be arsed working it out in my head, so show the group arrangements, please.
