I suggest a combination of the suggestions by Quatermass, Crys and pooh!

Quatermass said:
Oh, and if any voters have stories in the running, they can vote only once for one, and precisely one, of their stories, and must choose stories they didn't author for their other votes.
CrysaniaMajere said:
What about if we take the "top 8 stories with the most votes" and start back with only those at 0 again, having maybe just 2 votes each so anyone can decide? If you decide to do A vs D maybe those two are the ones that would get first and second, instead they get both eliminated... just an idea, if anyone cares which comes second of course.

Voting system #2
System #2 is the same as #1, but for the 5 stories you choose, you must give 5 points for the best, 4 points for second best etc.
I'll try to keep a running total for each story as we go along and you can all shout at me if (not when) I make a mistake.
There is obviously one poster submitting multiple entries, so voters should be limited to only being allowed to vote for one of their own entries.
If the previous favourite book games have proven anything, it is that certain people will vote loyally for who the poster is, and not what story is the best entry, and - Shock! Horror! - has even organized by pm a voting game plan! :naughty:

Voting for 5 stories with a decreasing point system is a good idea and during he second round, the authors should again remain anonymous and we use Cry's suggestion of starting back at 0 again, and retaining the voting system of decreasing points?

I say we make the voting system as complicated as possible with each voter getting many different graded votes, alternate choices, cross-referencing, sub-clauses to be taken into account, eliminations and endless rounds and try to make Pooh's head explode.
I agree! I'll plan accordingly.

I just want to make it quite clear that if we do succeed in making Pooh's head explode I'm not going to be the one who clears up the mess.

I'm not making that mistake again.

:snooty: Nonsense! It'll only be a virtual explosion so all you need is one of these... :chores-vacuum:

Virtual? I was thinking more 'Scanners'...

Anyway I think it should be a secret ballot, votes being pm'd to Pooh who has to tally them.

I also think that nobody should be able to vote for their own entries AT ALL. People voting for themselves will just skew the result, especially if they have multiple entries.

I agree with Mongo!

I'd like to add that if I was in charge, I'd go for three winners with at least one a non-native English speaker. Meaning if there's a non-native speaker in the first three, the normal score stands, if not, than first and second place goes to number one and two, and place three to the highest ranking non-native speaker.

And everyone would get pie.

32 LOVE FOR CHOCOLATES
DIET, NONE IN YOUR HOUSE, YOUR LOCAL SHOP HAS ONE LITTLE BOX

Oh this is good, oh yes, this is so good, it's like paradise, how could I think of giving up such an indescribable experience. I must have been out of my mind, for sure, there's no other explanation. I like it so much, only thinking of putting it into my mouth.. feeling it down my throat.. oh, yes, give it to me, I want more, more! If I'm to loose myself then be it! ...What? ... Wait, this can't be the end of it! Already? You sure? ..but.. I want more! Should I ask everybody in town, I WILL have more!

33 The Minotaur

Theseus searches the labyrinth for the Minotaur, sword in hand. He's almost there, he can feel the terrible smell of the beast coming closer and closer. He turns the corner, ready to strike at whatever may come.
The Minotaur is knitting a scarf.
A visitor! I have never had a visitor in all these years! Fancy a salad? I grow my own vegetables. He points proudly to a vegetable plot. I’ve got turnips too and some sprouts.
Theseus is speechless for a moment. I thought you only ate human flesh?
Human flesh? Whatever gave you that idea? I’m a vegetarian!

Do you really think people will be voting for themselves? I mean, it doesn't make any sense - this competition is mainly to figure out if others like the way you write, what you write, to get an outside opinion... by voting for yourself you're only cheating yourself and nobody else... or am I just being too naive? o_O

Most people have submitted more than one story. There have been 14 different entrants so far (I think).I have submitted approx 5, but I would only vote for two of them. Two other people have submitted 4.

If you can't vote for your own story, then some stories will receive no votes and I don't think that's nice.

Yes, you're being too naive. If it's within the rules and it's not cheating then people who, after all, want to win will vote for themselves. If they have 5 entries and 5 votes then they'll vote for themselves 5 times.

Well that's mighty sporting of you Pooh. Me, I'd vote for all 5. I mean, I wouldn't want to cheat, but If it's a competition then you enter to win, surely, and if you're aiming to win then you give yourself the best chance you can, within the rules.

I still think that you should only be allowed to vote for yourself once.

mC - Presumably people would vote for themselves because they believe that their own stories are better than any of the other competitors ... so they should be limited!

It doesn't matter very much if the voting is via a pm to pooh or on the board. As long as the author is not identified, then it should be a fair reflection ... unless anyone arranges to rig the betting via pm! ;)

I think you'll find that particular effect all but impossible on a bb board like this? A vid from Scanner perhaps but it's not quite the same effect for this medium is it . . . ?

I see all this controversy over how to vote has had an adverse effect on the entry rate. What a surprise...

And really if you're going to be scrupulous about it people who have entered shouldn't vote at all surely regardless of how many pieces they've submitted? :ugeek:

I must say that I'm simply overwhelmed by all your valuable suggestions as to how I should run the voting for the competition.I can't thank you enough for your incisive input and will be taking each and every suggestion on board......then throwing them into the sea just as soon as this ship leaves port.

Now, whichever system I choose to adopt, there will be at least one person who'll say, "Harumph!! It's not how I'd have done it!

Tough titty! It's my game, so I'll decide. Trust me......I'm a bully!

(You may have noticed that each story now has a number. This took me about 20 minutes to do. However, for Voting system #3 (which I'll tell you about later), I'll have to change ALL these numbers!  )
