Ayup All...

Just wanted to say that I think Granny's One of the Best Characters Ever written. She reminds me SO much of my dear Departed Nanny Woolley, 4' 10" but don't mess... Now I know Grannys not that tiny, but I don't like most of the representations of her as the shrew with the Bun, But Love her as the Character seen on the Kirby Paperback edition, which is the one I've started again today. You just Don't Mess do you ? But she knows what to do and is ALWAYS prepared to make herself the 'Pinch in the Hourglass'. Top Girl.

What do you all think of Granny ?

Sorry if she's been discussed beore.

Pretty much the same.
Very fascinating woman even though sometimes she seems a bit arrogant if you don't really look closely.
There's quite a discussion in the monthly discussion of Carpe Jugulum about that special trait of hers.

Wouldn't say that. Sometimes it's part of her Headology, but sometime I think it's just how she is.
Let's take Carpe Jugulum as an example. Some thought she could have shown up when Oats celebrated the service to show her respect. Well, she wasn't there per se, but she attended as an eagle she had borrowed. This doesn't have anything to do with headology, that just how she behaves.

Ayup Christian...

I've never, ever thought her Arrogant in the Classic sense, but I sense her weariness for having to think for so many OTHER people who really should know better. As well as for herself. Grannys certainly earned her Hat if nothing else...

Personally, I think Granny and Sam Vimes are Pterry's best characters, and are similar in many ways. Both are headstrong, both are sometimes arrogant, both buck authority as much as they can while still respecting certain societal conventions, and both struggle to suppress their inner 'darkness.' The main difference is that Vimes didn't start out this way but gained his power and confidence over time, whereas it always seems that Granny had her confidence from the very beginning.

I'd love to see a DW book that features the two of them working together on a case.

I like Granny too.

I think she knows she can be arrogant and often tells herself off for it too when it makes her miss stuff or go too far.

I think Granny Weatherwax is a brilliant character but I struggled with the dedicated witches books until I had read the Tiffany Aching series. After reading them she has become one of my favourite characters alongside Sam Vimes.
