Enjoying the books so far. It's been a long time since I've been reading so frantically and continously.

However, can it be that there are some quite British things in them that are hard to understand?

The horrible little man for example. Is that some kind of shout the seargents give at recruits in the army? Doesn't sound too offensive in my foreigners ears.

What about this treacle stuff? What is it? Some kind of molasse? But what's the thing about the treacle mine? That doesn't make sense. Is it as silly as the Schmaltzberg fat mines?

Welcome to the site, dr_random!

Yes, it is pretty British and yes, sergeants really do scream "you 'orrible little man!" They also shout a lot worse than that.

As for treacle mining - see here. ;)

I always thought the "You orrible little man" was aka the TV show "It Ain't Half Hot Mum" character Sargeant Major. Anything shouted or said in a very quiet voice says a whole lot more than if you just read it.

I haven't had a treacle sandwich for years! Feel like one now......

Edit: I never knew that about treacle mines Tony. As a kid out west I knew treacle salt licks as huge blocks for the cattle to lick. And of course Mum used it to cook with treacle and golden syrup so we always had it in the house and had it on toast instead of honey sometimes. Mmmmmmm on hot scones!

And then living up north for ten years in the sugar cane fields the smell of hot treacle when the cane was harvested and processed is a smell to behold when you drove past the mills..... ugh.

You haven't lived until you've had Golden Syrup on toast.
Or golden syrup sarnies (a golden yellow sweet tasting trecle)

Mum would make me golden syrup sandwiches for school lunch and it would make the bread go hard as the syrup soaked into it .... mmmmmm. I am SO buying some tomorrow. Oh and then i can make Anzac biscuits. And I am going to make scones and have it on them.

We used golden syrup last year when there was all the snow to make sugar pictures like in "little house".The kids were absolutely entranced....mine and the neighbouring kids who all came to help eat it up.....it´s called "snow candy and there is an easy to follow instruction online if you google "snow candy".

Stirred your appetites, then?

Thanks for the answers.
As I'm coming from the Rhineland we know a similar thing to treacle, then:
Ruebenkraut (and it is NOT made of sauerkraut, thank you for intending to mention it) and it goes well with our famous potato pancakes.

Treacle must be one of the finer culinary sights Ankh-Morpork serves, considering the number of unspeakable dishes that are mentioned.

Mmmmmmh.....Riefplätzger met Rüvkraut.......mmmmmmhhhh.....
I think I know what I´m going to treat the kids with tomorrow.....

If you think about it though.....tell people that you enjoy grated potatoes mixed with egg, onions, salt, pepper and fried in oil,and liberally dribbled with sweet syrup,or apple preserve, and they must think you´re bonkers. But it is soooooo good!
