There was a story that was only debunked in the 1970s that the name 'kangaroo' came from an early naturalist asking a local what a certain animal (a kangaroo) was called. The native's response was (in his language) 'I don't understand you' which sounded like 'kangaroo' and was therefore the name given to the animal. More about it HERE.

I'm pretty sure that Terry is referring to this with his 'your finger you fool' story. ;)

I have to read every day. My then 15 yr old daughter was constantly reading TP but I knew the person who had hooked her on them and didn't respect thier choices in alot of things.. but I was desperate so sauntered into her room and took one of her stack of TP. I was up all night and only put the book down to drive the kids to school, then went home and read the rest of that book. I did nothing else but the basics (and yes talked TP when I wasn't reading) until I had read every single TP book I could get my hands on. She is now 23 and we give each other his books when they come out (reading them on the way to each others houses before we hand them over). She came to my house at 2am to tell me of TP's altzheimers and we talked and grieved all night for Terry and for Discworld. It is like "The Neverending Story"... the darkness is coming.. :( As I get older, I find my need for material possessions becoming less... but I covet, COVET, a full set of Terry's books.

Wasnt a very good boy in school and got kicked out at 15. But before I was asked to leave, I had to choose a book to read for an english assesment. Went to the library and hunted around for something, never had a clue and wasnt particuarly interested. Finally I chose a book cause I liked the picture on the front, looked pretty nutty and I thought "that'll do me."
It was The Colour Of Magic. And I read it and thought it was pretty good, but I was kicked out of school before the assessment.
Anyhoo, that was in 1995 and I still have the book - long overdue to be returned, approaching 16 years to be exact.

Dread to think what the fine will be!

I was living on the west coast of the sth island in NZ at the time, and a mate had quite a collection of fantasy?sci fi books. I grabbed Mort off the shelf and from that time on I was hooked. I've bought the whole back catalog in paperback and have hardcovers from Monstrous regiment on.

My best friend bought "Going Postal" at the airport in Dubai and came back raving about this great new author he'd found. Being slightly anal, I had to start with the Colour of Magic. We are reading the series together in publishing order but he's a slower reader than me, having two or three books on the go at once.... i have to keep waiting for him to catch up to me. Plus, he doesn't want to read them too quick... in case we run out! Lol. o_O

While I had read various chapters of discworld books before. It wasnt until I started work that I really discovered the discworld series. Going Postal was on the work canteens bookshelf and on my first day it was the only book which was not a horror title so I started reading it. Lunch time became my favourite part of the day and when I had finished it I started buying more of the series to read. I now have a bookshelf full of Discworld novels at home!

When I was 16 my bf at the time lent me the first three books. I was hooked from then on.

I did give him the books back but then had to buy my own copies!
