Not necessarily - the cover art's not the usual mad melee, which is anyway a standard artistic option for otherwise unillustrated books as there's just the one place to splurge and make a statement.
Josh was a very versatile artist - have a look at his site especially the Horror and Sci-Fi galleries - it's a flash site though so don't bother scrolling, just click on numbers to the left of the screen link and that'll move them into view
Am definitely getting that for my birthday though!
Aw man! Kirby is ok for covers, but if i have to read a comic with his i'll faint. I don't read that many comics anyway, so im ok then though. I think kirby's people are a bit sort of flabby and muscles sticking out in the wrong places I prefer my people to be at least a bit handsome or pretty, at least not ugly, which is why i dont like kidby's nanny and igors. And kirby is hard to tell characters apart. One guy on deviant art has bred a new artist: Josh Kidby! "This drawing is based on Josh Kidby's work"
I have the large illustrated Eric in paperback and I think all the pictures are fab. I notice the re-release comes in paper- or hardback, was there a hardback original?
I agree Josh Kirby's work was pretty cornea-busting and that Paul Kidby has probably come closer than most to the 'real' characters but I have a soft spot for the old covers. Call it nostalgia (neuralgia!) or plain bad taste but I think the Kirby covers were beautiful. And they helped back in the bad old days when Pterry's books were often hidden in the darkest recesses of some 'respectable' bookshops!
It originally came out in paperback and hardback at the same time which is why most copies sold were the paperback. The original hardback will cost you between £60 and £75 if you can find it

I bought the soft cover version on original release, Josh's illustrations are fabulous throughout. I admit that his characters are not how I see them but as the original UK cover artist, I associate the Discworld with his work more than any other artist (even though Paul Kidby gets the characters 'right'!).
Plus, how could you not like Eric? It has the classic line 'He's Mr Poo!' in it

Oh FFFFFFFFor goodness sake! Really? I had the original Eric (hardback) before I became a DW devotee and gave it away. Never liked it. Preferred the printed novels. Then again I had NO idea GETTING hardcover DW books was a difficult thing back then.
Yesterday in the post office I was asked if I wanted to open a bank account with them, she was not very happy when I said they were in too much trouble, she got the right hump.
