:rolleyes: How do I know if I have a first edition of Terry's book Jingo, I got it in 1997 and he signed it for me. I know it was published in 97 but cant tell if its a first edition as there is no info inside anywhere that I can see. o_O:

If you defintely got it in 1997 then it is almost certainly the first edition because it only came out on the 6th November that year and they printed 120,000 of them, making it the most common of the hardbacks.

It should be printed by Gollanz, the book club edition didn't come out until 1998, and there will be a series of numbers somewhere on the page that includes the ISBN which must have a 1 at the beginning similar to the example shown below

Hey Mad, how can you tell if it's a first print of a first edition? I didn't even know there was such a thing till recently.

I can't give you a screen shot as my books are still boxed,it would be the same as Mad's but the number sequence would be: 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2 and so on the lowest number would be that print edition, if they ran zero to nine the number sequence would be: 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 in a straight run and again 0 would indicate 1st /1st, hope that clarifies it for you. :)

Nope :laugh: I just don't see the difference there between 1st edition 2nd printing and 2nd edition. But thanks anyway.

Also, you might find that you just get a thumbprint. Although last year he did sign at the second signing session (try saying that fast).

Dotsie the 2nd edition is a compleatly new print run with a new ISBN if another publisher issues it or when the print run for that book has run/sold out , if the number sequence starts with 2 that is still a 1st edition but a 2nd impression/printing. :)

Sorry I'm with Dotsie, i still don't get it? Surprising I can read at all eh?

Tony posted this on another thread - http://www.colinsmythe.co.uk/discworldpages/dwindex.htm but i'm not sure what it means if one of your books matches the list, does it mean its a good thing or are all books ever printed just listed here?

Taking one at random: ERIC paperback, has an ISBN:

0-575-05191-4, which digits should I be looking at?
