You know what? Your animation of Roy Mustang has an eye patch. Vimes wore an eye patch when he pretended to be John Keel.

...

ROY MUSTANG IS ANIME VIMES!

Oh, and not manga but I've been reading the Haruhi Suzumiya light novels (the fourth one just came out in America). Since everyone knows what it is via the anime and manga thought I'd mention it here.

Ah, you're talking about *spoiler* what happened to Winry's parents, right? I always think of present Vimes (minus the eye patch) when comparing the two. I even hear Mustang's dubbed voice when I read Vimes' dialogue!

That's part of why the City Watch books appeal to me: Vimes is kinda like Roy Mustang and Batman all in one!

I enjoy lots of manga, but perhaps my favourite series so far is Monster by Naoki Urasawa, which I feel is to manga what Watchmen is to comics. In other words, it's the closest thing to well-written literature in the graphic novel medium.

Next is Death Note, followed by the manga adaptation of Neon Genesis Evangelion (there are times when it is better than the original anime), and Ghost in the Shell.

I've never read GITS, only seen the films, is it worth it?
Well, the storylines are a bit hard to follow, but they're fairly deep. Then again, it's full of tech-wank and fanservice. Seriously. Just don't get offended when you read the second full story in Ghost in the Shell and come across...well, what else can I say but an all-female cybersex threesome? Blame Masamune Shirow for that.

I personally prefer the Stand-Alone Complex anime series. Think NCIS, only cyberpunk.

I've got the condensed versions of SAC, don't know if it's worth getting tyhe full versions. But there's so many other animes that I want to get, that I'll admit that GITS is quite far down my list. Still got Paprika waiting to be watched on my shelf after all!

(And Brotherhood vol. 2 is out soon so obviously i'm getting that one way or another  )

I might check monster out. It seems quite good

but long :(

I prefer shorter ones. Less to catch up on
Start from the start. That's what I did. It takes the whole of the first volume to set the scene (and it impressed me greatly), and most of the second volume to get things rolling. The third and fourth volumes are the most impressive so far, though I have only read the first five volumes (out of 18 ) of Monster.
