It seems that a new artist has been selected to re-imagine Tiffany Aching and the Feegles for a new set of paperback covers.

Laura Ellen Anderson is the new artist and I have to say that I quite like the artwork. See article and samples HERE. I've said before that, although I love the Paul Kidby book covers, they leave little to the imagination as to what the characters look like. I quite like the idea of a more subtle impression that causes the reader to make their own impression. I think this artwork works in that sense. I like the new covers. However, after buying the hardbacks, paperbacks and Kindle versions of the Tiffany books, I don't think I'll be buying these versions any time soon.

Mehh. While I don't hugely love Kidby's covers (which I think make Tiffany look like a soulless mannequin), these are far too "cartoony" and "juvenile" for my taste. They remind me of the execrable cartoony covers someone slapped on more recent US paperback editions of James and the Giant Peach and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Oh, for pity's sake. Why didn't someone tell them that "boots" is British for "shoes"? They've got her in galoshes!

Shoes is shoes in British. Boots are anything from an ankle supporting, hard wearing piece of footwear, to wellington boots and thigh length boots. In fact, boots are almost any footwear that isn't shoes or sandals.

Gosh, that's pretty much what boots here in the U.S. are as well. What are the odds on that linguistic coincidence?

I still refuse to belief that the solid, hard-wearing, heavy foot-coverings that Tiffany wears as hand-me-downs from her family are rubber galoshes. I'm reasonably certain they are not riding boots either. Solid leather shoes that cover the ankles, yes, the kind of shoe I've been told for 50 years in UK novels are called boots.

On one hand I agree with you, raisindot, I don’t feel totally comfortable with the covers, but at the same time I think they may attract new young readers, and I like the bold expression on Tiffany’s face.
