New discworld hardbacks to be released...

Hiya all,

I was browsing through Amazon.co.uk's list of upcoming Terry Pratchett books, and stumbled across quite a few hardback editions of the Discworld series to be released in 2013/2014. Does anyone know anything about these books? Apparently it's Gollancz who are publishing them, and it appears as if the entire Discworld series may gonna get re-released in hardback format...

I for one will buy every one of these titles (if they indeed are being released) as I have long hoped for the entire series to be rereleased in hardbacks... paperbacks just don't stay pretty and durable for very long...

I heard elsewhere that as it's Gollancz, the books will only go up to Jingo, as the publisher switched to Doubleday after that. If that is the case, I suspect it's going to frustrate a lot of people. I don't know if this is actually the case or speculation, but a set that is only a collection of Gollancz books, is not a real set.

But really most of those books are in Terry's 'golden era' so I'm still attracted.

From an artwork PoV although I love all 3 of 'our' artists coverwork there's a lot going for this collection in a 'retro' sense as they have a really classic cohesive 'feel' to them in the way of the simplicity of the old Penguin books. And they retail cheaper than Transworld... :shifty:

That's entirely up to you, Jan. I just thought it important to point out the possible cut-off point in the series in case anyone got disappointed.

Nearly all of the US versions have horrendous covers and are full of stupid Americanized edits. That's why I spent a small fortune importing the Corgi Kirby versions (which have their own fair share of typos) from Across the Pond. And it's why I've pre-ordered my Brit-covered Raising Steam from Amazon Canada instead of deciding to wait another five months before the U.S. version comes out.

I'll have to respectfully disagree that these in any way resemble the American efforts. It all comes down to personal preference, but like them or not it is clear to me that these covers represent a huge amount of thought and effort from the art director at Gollancz as well as the illustrator. I personally just love them. I will be buying every single one (I am now a Waterstones employee again, so I get a nice heft discount, plus, though I've really no space in my room for more books just now, I'll be moving house soon and my priority when room-hunting is always extra shelf space )

I've been thinking a lot about Discworld covers: I more than half suspected new covers were on the way because the Pratchetts have been so thin on the shelves, which often means the publishers have stopped printing old editions in anticipation of bringing out new ones.

In fact I've been doing a lot of preparatory sketches of what I'D like to do with Discworld covers, and if I wasn't so damn happy with the above editions I;d be pretty annoyed to be pipped at the post!

I'm very fond of the Kirby covers (I'm sure these will remain in print) and I think Kidby's a genius, but I think the illustrative (and cartoonish, in Kidby's case) covers have become off-putting to new readers and don't represent the contents quite correctly.

These seem the perfect combination of beautiful, witty, classy, unusual and colourful to me.

I'm thrilled, I think Gollancz have pulled a blinder.

Well as tonyblack has stated, the first part of these books (up to Jingo) will be published by Gollanz.
If these hardcover books sell well, then Transworld will probably release the second half of the discworld titles in similar hardcover editions. But it will all come down to sales...

Back in the day, I started buying the Unseen Library hardcover editions from BCA Books, with the hopes of owning, in time, the entire discworld series in beautiful matching hardbacks. Unfortunately, BCA stopped printing the series halfway through, which made me really really annoyed...

And so now I stand in the same kind of dilemma: should I start buying these books as they are being released, again in the hope of owning a complete set, and hoping that they sell well enough for transworld to pick up the thread once we get to Jingo...? or, if i wait until transworld decides to print the rest, I might get in the annoying situation that the first books are sold out... hmmm...

Buying an entire set of discworld books will cost me a fortune (once again)... hmmm, oh well, I'd better find my creditcard out, coz if I don't support these hardbacks, then why should transworld decide to print the rest...

I was on the fence when I heard about these new covers.
Josh Kirby is my favourite illustrator, got all the Discworld paperbacks which are looking a bit tatty now.
Been read many times over and over the years.
I like the artwork I went to Waterstones to have a look and was impressed with the design and binding.
The printed covers are on a kind of canvas texture with bits of the design created in silver or gold foiling.
So I order them @ whsmith for 6.99 each instead of 9.99.

Very pleased with them and they look great all together in the book case.
