Like Wheres my Cow i thought the whole Pooh book thing was a commentary on childrens book. In the Uk theres a big trend in childrens books about poo (not the bear) and Terry does do social commentary .
I have nothing against poo books, other than not being a fan of the end product. (ba-da boom).
I, too, thought Pterry was mentioning the poo book in Snuff simply as a commentary on the idea that there are children's books on just about every topic. If Pterry had decided to write a standalone kids book about poo, I wouldn't have minded either--wouldn't have bought it, but wouldn't have cared.
It's the fact that he takes a subject that isn't particularly central to the story--poo and books about poo--and uses it to flog the sales of the separate book he's writing about that gets my goat. I'd feel a lot less bothered by it if he had written a separate kids book about goblins, since they are at least a central theme in Snuff. And maybe I'd be less bothered by it if I felt that Snuff wasn't one of Pterry's worst books in ages. But that's just me. Your kilometerage, of course, may vary.
