Former England captain Rio Ferdinand's wife Rebecca has died after a short battle with cancer. The 34-year-old mother-of-three passed away in London's Royal Marsden Hospital.

There was a minutes applause 5 mins into the game at West Ham out of respect for her and Rio. RIP.

Seems a bit odd, five minutes into the game?

Although he came through the West Ham youth system and was a star player for West Ham, his England career (and fame) took off with Man Utd. where his shirt number was '5'. It's a football thing that tributes are made according to a player's squad numbers if they are not holding a minute's silence before a game. We did the same thing for Dylan Tombides (our Aussie youth player) who passed away earlier this season. It's the first time I've heard of it being done for a player's family though, especially an ex-player.

So 5 (or whatever shirt number) minutes into the game, they stop for an applause tribute?

It's the stopping the match bit that I can't get my head round.

They don't stop the match for it, it's just the supporters clapping for one minute to show their respect instead of the usual cheering for their team or abusing the opposition's. The game continues as normal.
