Leonard Cohen, the Canadian poet and novelist who abandoned a promising literary career to become one of the foremost songwriters of the contemporary era, has died, according to an announcement Thursday night on his Facebook page. He was 82.

I heard his song “Hallelujah” for the first time when I was three years old and went to see Shrek to the cinema with my parents. After all these years, I still like to sing it and play it with my guitar and piano.

Castro survived assassination plots (I seem to recall one including an explosive clam being detonated while he was swimming nearby), only to die of old age. Huh.
