Not well known here, I suppose, but for many years my main man for books: long-time bookseller at conventions, Larry Smith has passed away.

I just want to mention a young woman named Anna. I can't really give her surname, although I know it, because I respect the privacy of her family. Anna was 26 years old and she was taken from her family and the wider world by drug abuse. I've never met her or her family but I felt like there was a bond between myself and her Mom. . . . short version - her mom and I 'met' on the internet more than ten years ago on a breast cancer site as we are both survivors. We chatted over the years and discovered a lot about each other and a great deal that we had in common, a love of books and teaching children how to love books and reading (she was a school librarian before retirement). We both love the natural world and wild creatures, we love cooking, feeding people and the comfort of friends. I learnt that she was a beauty queen and was once kissed by The King of rock'n'roll Elvis Presley! (Yes! Really!) We shared a lot over the years. Today I learnt that her younger daughter, Anna, had died at the end of December and it broke my heart. Here I am utterly devastated on behalf of someone I have never met and who lives thousands of miles away on another continent with an ocean between. Sometimes it's not about being famous is it?
