Heads up - the SF Elves are back in town!

Well I've decided that we need to get our noggins together for this year's convention and so anyone who's interested in contributing to the Strangely Fascinating panel (scurrilously based on QI but about Discworld) can come in here and have a 'thought shower' about any aspect of getting this scintillating show on the road! You don't have to be going to the convention to help out, but if you are you might get roped into helping out 'backstage' on the night!

Nothing too much set in stone yet but our resident quizzer/question master combo of Chris Boote and Pat Harkin will likely be back in the saddle again and Eelco (conventions Programming Head Honcho) is going to try and get Jacqueline Simpson and/or Stephen Briggs and/or Rob and/or Rhianna for the panel.

The theme of the convention hasn't been finalised but we know that it's likely going to be based in 'modern' Ankh Morpork this time around and with Raising Steam still 'new' I'm guessing that Steampunk might be in order and UU and The Watch will be much in evidence?

So anyone who's read RS - we'll be wanting some questions loosely to do with that and as I haven't read it yet (and won't until the paperback's out - I refuse to shell out that much money  ) experts are required. I'm currently memorising The Compleat Ankh-Morpork too but any other ideas on the question format including 'Nobody Knows' and General Ignorance' will be more than welcome.

So who's in? :ugeek:

This is on WordPress but open to anyone to comment so you don't need to register to use it (because it's not just people on this forum). HOWEVER - some pages relating to questions and other secret squirrel stuff will be off-view except for Authorised Elves - we'll sort that out soon! ;)

Yay! That's you and me then WWD

I think mC said she'd like to help again so we'll wait a bit longer before we get stuck in - I'm putting together a blogging site so we can work off campus again :shifty:

I'm here, I'm here! Not sure how much I can contribute though, I wasn't among the question-gatherers last time, but at least I've got a copy of RS (thanks, David!), so I'll start on that - as soon as I've done my two presentations on EU procurement and environmental politics :p

Will we/you be using the same musical theme? I can contact Simon, see if he has maybe any new ideas..?

I won't be able to go but I can contribute to the questions-writing stuff. I've got my "Bouncy-supplied-genuine-UK" Raising Steam available for reference.

Yay - good to have you contributing Jeff. I think RS will be a focal point for this convention as they saying it's all about the Industrial Revolution AM so I think there are going to a lot of Steampunk mettyfors going on as well. :p

Am putting final pieces of an off site blog on for this so there won't be too many spoilers for those who are going to the convention - will post the link v. soon :naughty:

Re: QI 4 Ankh-Morpork 2014 - Strangely Fascinating revisited

OK – we’re getting ever closer to lift off!

The following is a copy over from the off site Elf HQ (if you're an elf and you can't get that link to work, let me know by PM).

... it’s just a tad under 3 months off yet, so high time to start using this as a storage facility even if it’s only moi in here (the WordPress subscriptions being fairly obnoxious aren’t helping, but some Elf peeps might be able to access).
I’m going to be concentrating my personal efforts on the Compleat AM and the visuals this time around, so they’re mostly done in time for the ‘Big Night’ as we’ll be having a prime time slot yet again - so those good people who’ve committed to providing some fiendish questions on Raising Steam, The Watch, UU and all things under heaven in the Big Wahooni – you can start any time you like as of…

NOW!!!!!

Re: QI 4 Ankh-Morpork 2014 - Strangely Fascinating revisited

Don't worry Mici - we can do some things on here instead, especially things like the music as that won't spoil the Q&A part for everyone.

For stuff that needs more 'security' - if you can't access the wordpress 'elf only' areas then we can go to email/PM instead so if you'd rather go that route just PM me in here if you haven't already got my email details (as some of have already  ) ;)

Re: QI 4 Ankh-Morpork 2014 - Strangely Fascinating revisited

Now that the old team's assembling again it's time for a quick recap.

What mostly needs doing for the next 6 - 8 weeks is questions from all the books based around Ankh-Morpork AFTER CoM and LF (which we focused on last time) but especially the Watch and Moist series including and probably especially, Raising Steam.

I've caved in and got RS on audiobook today (on the basis that I get it 'cheap' on Audible subscription  ) but only to get a general overview of the story so those of you who've forked out for the hardback and already read it I'm relying on you for some tricksy questions and references/factoids to build into the mix for the QI format (those of you who haven't seen QI - try THIS for a rough guide

I'll be concentrating my own question setting efforts on The Compleat Guide to Ankh-Morpork but those of you who have that tome are most welcome to chip in with ideas as well  If you could PM/email me your Elf work rather than post that'd be good as then we keep things fresh for those who're going to the convention

I'd like to get as much as possible done this and next month so that we have most of July to do the lion's share of the 'prep' in the way of visuals for the show instead of leaving that until the last minute like we did last time so we don't have to do much in the way of rehearsal  Those of you with spiffy pics that tie in with your questions and refs - please PM me rather than posting in this thread for the same reasons as the Q&A stuff ;)

I'll start on that tomorrrow Jan, bit too tired just now if I read I would fall asleep, the climb is starting to catch up with me getting a little bit stiff, I would go to bed but it's still daylight here.

I'll have a go with The Compleat Guide to Ankh-Morpork as well I really cannot face reading Raising Steam again, I have the audible version as well but gave up after 2 hours, there has to be some really obscure stuff in the guide

Re: QI 4 Ankh-Morpork 2014 - Strangely Fascinating revisited

Cheers Mad - I got the audible RS and am about quarter of the way in using it as my chapter before sleep time. Is working a treat as a soporific

I think the Guide may be a good source as not everyone will have read RS and the theme is supposed to be more AM-centric so good to have more than one of us scouring it for some obscure factoids ;)
