As said, I think the gate opened for him at a different place than it did for Eric. Remember the steps (the whole, the way to hell is pathed etc thing?) if we look at it from that perspective the entrance to hell is where one feels well and starts trying to 'improve' the world because he feels well.
Well, Rinso's not someone trying to improve it, but the path still led him up to where he'd feel best.

Oh, that's simple: The gate out of hell led for each of them somewhere else.

I'm reading Eric at the moment. There is in fact a Circle of Hell in goes to Psuedopolis, where Eric lives. That's how Rincewind got there in the first place.
