Exquisitor Vorbis, for me. Frightening stuff from Terry. Very realistic figure; very ... human. History seems strewn with Vorbisian people. One that instantly spring to mind - and could be one of the inspirations for the character - is Tomas de Torquemada ( ).

Although not technically a villain, Verity 'Hammerhead' Pushpram and her assaults on Nobby Nobbs with sundry crustacea is positively terrifying ...

Mr. Pin and Teatime both scared me pantless. Mr. Tulip seems more like a messed up kid who got in with bad company; I feel rather sorry for him.

Vorbis is just... wrong.

The villains who scared me the least were the Magpyr clan vampires. Bunch of yuppies :snooty:

The cunning man. when he tries escaping from the ancient book or as he starts running through the hanging picture (I've forgotten what you call those castle ornaments) was quite nerve wracking for me and i think the fact he can use almost anything as a window is scary.... reminds me of the ring where she comes out of the tv....

I'm reading Nightwatch (again, how the hell does a book getter every time you pick it up ????)

Capt Swing has had a mention but what about 'sergeant' Carcer?

Vorbis and Carcer are the two obvious ones for me. But reading Fifth Elephant again, I forgot how relentlessly terrifying Wolfgang is. His 'Game' through the forests, chasing a naked knackered Vimes is one of the darkest scenes in Discworld, along with Vorbis turning Om upside-down just to see what would happen. Both have a playful sadistic attitude to pain and suffering.

Not going along with Teatime though. I can't say he scared me that me that much. Hogfather is not as dark as some of Pratchett's books, and he comes across as a bit of a Disney villain to me. More comparable (though scarier) to Lily in the Witches novels than the truly nasty villains of Discworld.

Teatime comes across to me as a normal brain damaged psycho devoid of feeling which is scary enough in itself.

Just re-listening to the 5th Elephant on audio book.
I quite agree with you there Doug

For confirmed villains, I suppose either the Dragon from Guards! Guards! or Carcer. The Dragon because of its nigh-invulnerable corruption of Ankh-Morpork, and Carcer not so much because he's a shameless psychopath but because he tries his best to look innocent, which is just insecure.

For ensembles, it's between the Cable Street Particulars, the Omnian torturers, or the Elves. All of them do the same gruesome acts on people, though for different reasons.

For "potential" villains, Granny Weatherwax gone bad is a scary thought.
