As an aspiring writer I'm impressed that Terry has created a series in which he is free to experiment more or less with whatever genre, character or idea he wants, while still retaining common elements and being able to have cameos from characters in other parts of the series.
Of course there are some restrictions to this. The setting of the Discworld books must remain more or less constant, as do the rules of the world. But for a writer to have such a diverse selection of sub-series is probably unprecedented in literature (I could be wrong on this, but it'd be interesting to know).
From a marketing perspective this is great for the publishers, as its even easier to market a book in the same series as one by the same author.
The only downside is that there are some books in the Discworld series that I'm not overly keen on. I find the witches series a bit dull and I've never got very far with any of them. But given time I probably will do.
Your thoughts?
