As an aspiring writer I'm impressed that Terry has created a series in which he is free to experiment more or less with whatever genre, character or idea he wants, while still retaining common elements and being able to have cameos from characters in other parts of the series.

Of course there are some restrictions to this. The setting of the Discworld books must remain more or less constant, as do the rules of the world. But for a writer to have such a diverse selection of sub-series is probably unprecedented in literature (I could be wrong on this, but it'd be interesting to know).

From a marketing perspective this is great for the publishers, as its even easier to market a book in the same series as one by the same author.

The only downside is that there are some books in the Discworld series that I'm not overly keen on. I find the witches series a bit dull and I've never got very far with any of them. But given time I probably will do.

Your thoughts?

There are other fantasy authors who have several series of novels set on the same world, Mercedes Lackey with the various series in Valdemar is the first that comes to mind, I think David Gemmell may be another. Pratchett probably has the edge in diversity of ideas brought into the books.

As for not liking the witches I'm shocked - go and sit in the corner and think about what you said

I think the series in a series plot is very good,I personally have not encountered another author doing the same.I tried reading all the DW books one after another but had to give up because I can´t afford to buy all of them as fast as I read them.
So I started reading Vimes and found it was a good idea to read the series concurrently,as I can read a new series book, then maybe something else and save up for the next one without getting confused as to whats happening in Discworld in the meantime.
Up to now I´ve got all Vimes with the exception of Truth, and have started collecting the Tiffany ones a while ago.
I definitely want to get the witch ones next.Even my Mum loves the witches ones she has read so far (from the library) and she has to know, she´s a practitioner...

I am nearing the end of reading them in order. The cost wasn't too great for me as I bought 75 per cent of mine cheap, second hand from ebay or charity shops. :)

Yeah,DAve,I try to get them cheap at Amazons, but here in Germany there are only very few places where one can get english second-hand books.Sometimes my library has a sale, which is where I try to get some.
