Hello all!
Quick question....I have, so far, read five Discworld books and loved them dearly. I have not yet read any of the Watch books. I received Snuff as a Christmas gift, and was wondering if I would be okay reading it now or should I wait until I have read the other Watch books? Thanks in advance!

Hi Justin and welcome to the site! :)

Personally I'd say read the others first as it will give you more background on the characters, although saying that, it's not a direct sequel in the same way that Light Fantastic is to Colour of Magic so there is probably enough info in there for you to not be lost.

Which five have you read so far? The first five? If so it would be cool to read them all in order, that's what I did and it's great to see the evolution of Terry's writing and world building.

Hope this helps, have fun on the forum!

Hi -justin- and welcome! :)

I'd say go ahead and read it. There is background to the characters, but I don't think there's anything you absolutely need to know before reading Snuff.

Enjoy!

I would say wait if you can. Snuff would be best read after at least Guards! Guards! and Men at Arms. Otherwise you wouldn't really appreciate the relationship between the main character and his wife (not to mention spoilers for the other characters). But if you can't wait, just go for it ;)

I agree with MongoGutman amd I'd say that it would certainly be useful to read "Thud" before "SNUFF" as there is something there which is referred to in SNUFF. However any book can be read in isolation of course.

Thanks for the input everybody! I have read Equal Rites, Wyrd Sisters, Mort, Reaper Man, and Hogfather (Reaper Man being my favorite so far.) I had thought about just reading Color of Magic and continuing in publication order from there, but I do like being able to just jump in about anywhere. Tough call, I will probably end up going with publication order. Thanks again!

I'd personally read them in order of the story arcs, but if you can't wait to read it, read it!!

But if you do, *do* re-read it after you've read the other Watch books as there will be some things you'll almost certainly miss reading it out of context.

I really need to re-read Feet of Clay and Jingo for the same reason. I came to both of those fresh and I'm sure I missed loads of stuff. After those two, I decided to read the books in order of the story arcs. Makes much more sense.
