Pooh knows I read all his posts - I need cheering up regularly and nothing gets me howling as much as pooh and his posts whether he means to be funny or not*

* but then he'd say the same about mine (aside from the length but then his concentration's not as good as mine) ;)

Hi there BaldJean and welcome to the forum  Are you the lady in the blue or the pink? ;)
Fools and idiots seldom differ.
I asked her the very same question 4 hours ago.
Pooh, you don't think Jan actually reads your posts, do you? :p
I didn't read that particular one 'cos it's not in this thread is it - you expect me to be clairvoyant too? :p

While reading "Thud!" I had the definite feeling of an erotic undertone in the relationship between Angua and Sally. Of course their nude meeting in the mud beneath Ankh Morpork is the most obvious example, but there is more to that at a closer look, despite their natural animosities because of their different species.

I think I know what you mean - Sally's very amused at Angua's hackles rising all the time and often that kind of grouchiness can 'cover' an attraction and at Tawnee's club Angua was certainly admiring Sally, but in terms of feeling unglamourous and grubby in her own borrowed clothes. It's possible like I said before, but Angua would need to lighten up and get over her jealousy, else Sally will have so much to laugh at (because it's so ridiiculous), Angua'll just end up getting more and more angry with her that it'd be too much to get over.

I have to say, I don't think there was anything erotic about their relationship at all. It was just Terry experimenting with a gal pals storyline (most people didn't like the results, I personally don't think he did too bad a job). Women tend to have an ability to appreciate (and sometimes overestimate) each other's attractiveness, which doesn't mean that they fancy each other. If Sally and Angua get into a physical relationship, then I'm a tin of pears.

Yummy!

Love a tin of pear halves I do... in an appreciative and wholly heterosexual gourmand way

Actually you're right - I think what Terry's doing with those two is exploring the cop-buddy tautology thing (like Starsky & Hutch possibly  ) and how it would have to be different for women. Perhaps. Maybe. Certainly as a man sees the female peer rivalry thing as they're evenly matched in terms of looks and efficiency/skills. ;)

Gotta agree with Dotsie here. Angua doesn't many any comments regarding Sally's looks (clothed or unclothed) other feeling jealous at how fabulous Sally looks, but this is more of an expression of Angua's own inferiority complex (as a werewolf, who are traditionally subservient to vampires and never feel truly comfortable in either their canine or human forms). Angua's and Sally's admiration of Tawnee are along the lines of women who are able to admire (and be jealous) of beauty in other women without necessarily being sexually attracted to said women. Even in their 'nude march' there's no narration describing either character's observations about how the other one looked.

Now, just because there's no lesbian overtones here doesn't mean PTerry shies away from the subject in his work. There is a PTerry book where two characters are in a committed lesbian relationship (I won't say which book in case you haven't read it).

Totally with you on this one Dotsie.
Have had lots of gal pals I have been naked with (lived in a house with girls for awhile and when it was time to get ready for a night out everyone was in and out of the bathroom, each others bedrooms, etc.)and it was the girls; didn't feel sexual towards any of them. Have had housefuls of visitors too when all the girls pile into beds together. Just a place to sleep. I have gay girlfriends and it never crosses my mind that they would look at me in any way other than as who I am: not in a sexual way. Then again I lived in a 99% male environment for ten years (mining) as a single woman and I had best friend MALE friends too with no sexual overtones. Spend a week on a 40 foot sloop at sea and you find yourself seeing naked men and women alot just out of space restrictions. I always thought Terry had a very good grasp on the feminine mind. I read the Witches books and the Guards books and thought it was freaky how Terry got into the womens mindset in Witches (the really little stuff women think and don't necessarily tell men) and yet do the same with men in Guards.
