Status Update.

"Just thought I'd say that I am reading The Last Hero and The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents right now.

The Last Hero I am reading at home (in the front room, because the Kelley Armstrong books that I promise my partner to read stay by my bedside, currently on Broken). I read Last Hero at home because even the small paperback that I have is too big for my makeshift book stand at work and also it is one of the few Pratchett's that I bought new from Waterstones, the others being Night Watch and Going Postal( + The Art of Discworld), so I don't want to get it too dirty in the projection booth.

Maurice I am reading at work and am 20 pages from the end.

I love the run after Fifth Elephant. The Truth may be my favourite book so far and Thief of Time was great. Maurice is awesome so far! The Last Hero...I will just have to wait till the end, am a bit mixed on it.

I should finish both books at the same time which will lead me to NIGHT WATCH, I'm so excited! I order Science of Discworld II yesterday, which if it comes soon enough, I may read first just to prolong my excitement fo Night Watch!"

Additional - got Science of Discworld II in the post today and will read that next before Night Watch.

You are going to love Night Watch!

The Last Hero is an odd one - the story is a vehicle for the illustrations and I'm not sure how well the story would stand on its own.

In much the same way, Eric was a vehicle (originally) for Josh Kirby's illustrations and many people would argue that as a novel without the illustrations, it's somewhat weak.

I'll be interested to know what you think though.

I read Eric sans illustrations and while I thought it was very funny in places, it did just seem like a series of sketches strung together - not that that's a bad thing - some of my favourite comedies are like that, its just suddenly very different from the other stories before and after.

I'd be interested to see the illustrations, though, is the book easy to come by?

Am 30 pages from the end of The Last Hero and am enjoying it in equal measure for pictures and story , Kidby is a genius,

I am supprised Rinsewind hasn't mention Ponse Du Quirm? to Leonard at all - is it just one of those random things where characters can have similar names or are they related. I know Susan Sto Helit is so named becasue her parents were royalty so does that mean both Leonard and Ponse are?

You can usually pick up an illustrated copy of Eric fairly cheaply (second hand) from Abe Books, but there are plans to rerelease it as a hardback - SEE HERE.

Ponce de Quirm is obviously a reference to the real explorer Ponce de Leon, who also went in search of the Fountain of Youth. The 'de Quirm' thing simply means 'of Quirm' - in much the same way, my surname 'Blackwell' means that at some stage I had an ancestor who lived in Blackwell.

So Leonard and Ponce may not be related at all.

Thought as much, I just can't think of any other characters that he does this with. Obviously I was familiar with the quest for the Fountain of Youth, bu t not with the explorer's name!

Will probably hunt for the illustrated Eric some time in paperback, unless the new hard back offers any other new material, I don't tend to buy hardbacks often due to space.

Dave I am SO jealous of you having lots of Discworld books left to read On the other hand... you don't at the moment have that tingly excited anticipation of knowing a new Discworld book is due out TOMORROW and you ring your friends and talk about it, your skin itching cause you have been DiscworldLESS for what seems like an eternity... Oh dear.... is there a 12 step program for us?

Dave I am SO jealous of you having lots of Discworld books left to read On the other hand... you don't at the moment have that tingly excited anticipation of knowing a new Discworld book is due out TOMORROW and you ring your friends and talk about it, your skin itching cause you have been DiscworldLESS for what seems like an eternity... Oh dear.... is there a 12 step program for us?

I don't know if it is lots or many, I many two thirds of the way through Monstrous Regiment now, loving it, but is the longest book so far and feels it...can't wait to read Hat Full of Sky next.

I do have them all on a bookshelf ready to read, apart from Midnight, (it looks pretty ) I am sure that by the time Snuff comes out I will have the tingly feeling.

I really enjoyed a Hat full of Sky, in fact all the tiffany books. so I think you should zoom through HFOS mainly cause it's fairly full of action

Probably an idea to wait. It is in my opinion the best of the three by a distance. its one of only a handful of Discworld the other half has read (Shes going by the random route) because she wanted to watch this and she loved it as well.

My Mrs keeps saying that she won't read them butwhen I read her bits she laughs, and since she is Wiccan has read some of the more thought provoking bit of the witches books and thinks she might read them some day.

It took a little persuasion. But she reads as much as i do so when books ran short i managed to get her to read Soul Music.
It helped that she had already gotten into Neil Gaiman having gone to a reading with me and had read all his books finishing with Good Omens. If your mrs is Wiccan surely Good Omens is a good book to get her going.

That's what I was thinking - she reads lots of fantasy or Urban Fantasy (not Twilight), but also more of the mystical stuff with less humour - shs's currently reading Trudi Canavan - The Magician's Apprentice.

Let me know what she thinks as i've been debating wether or not to try her books for a while. Twilight is not urban fantasy as it has merely replaced the names of typical highschool stereotypes with other groups. Its a fraud.

American Gods is proper Urban Fantasy and well worth a look if you or the other half hasn't yet.

She's read some of her others and likes them a lot - this current one is set 600 years before the the first trilogy - and the next trilogy is set 10-15 years after the first trilogy!

Okay I am in two minds now Dave. jealous of you having all the books to read but I think MORE jealous of all the "pretty" books lined up on your shelf. Rub it in!
