I will be honest, I have never attended a convention either due to work or money issues and on top of that I am sat on the fence about attending one, while I am a huge Discworld fan and have been for best part of 20 years, nothing I have seen or read has convinced me one way or the other to attend one.
While I would love to meet a few of the well known people that is attached to the Discworld and also get some of the collectables that are given/sold at theses events, nothing else really appeals to me, I'm hoping those who are convention regulars can convince me one way or another it is something I would enjoy and is worth me spend over £100 on.

Also a big thanks to Leo Boyd from BackSpindle Games and this forums very own Meekrat for giving me their view point and a few photos of the event here: http://bricksandbooks.co.uk/2011/a-look ... wcon-2011/

It would not cost you anything to come in and have a look except time and fuel costs you just would not be able to attend any of the panels or talks. :)

You have to pay for tickets do you not? what I need to know is what is there that is worth attending, besides bits I have read on various sites, nothing stands out for me. If I was to attend I would travel down and back each day, as I said i am on the fence so I hope you guys can convince me based on your experiences it is worth attending.

You can walk into the Hotel and use the main bar as there will be a few other guests not memers of the Con there but not that many, you won't be able to go anywhere else without your name badge showing you are a member. I always have a good time meeting up with people I know and sinking a few beers in good company and we use the main bar as well as the fan bar. :)

It's a social thing. Like Dug, I spend time in the bar chatting to other forum members. But I'm a bit shy (really), so when I went on my own I didn't really enjoy it and spent a lot of time in my room.

The events there are run by fans, so they vary in how polished they are. But the rule is anyone who wants to have fun, will do.

I don't do pubs and I don't drink so that is something that does not appeal to me, if I was to come I would have my wife and daughter with me. What I would like to know is besides listening to Sir Terry if he attends, what else is there, is there a place to buy stuff?

Yes, and parting with your cash is positively encouraged! There's also an auction for very special items, but prices are too crazy for me to join in.

The bar area isn't really pub-like, more hotel foyer-like with tables, a bar, and a coffee bar, and of course the man himself will be hanging around in there a fair bit.

Con isn't for everyone, don't worry if it doesn't appeal. Instead of forcing it on your family, couldn't you drive up for a day by yourself?

I don't drive and we always do things as a family, with what has been said I think your right conventions are not for everyone and I will save my money. o_O

RJH, the Conventions are for ALL the family, pratchett followers or not. One guy sat in the Sto Plains (reception) and read a book whilst his wife and her friends were at the various entertainments.
There were even babies to teenagers present at ours and they were welcome and made to feel part of it all too!
I suggest you get yourself a day ticket, if they have them at Birmingham, and have a nose around. It's fun, trust me on this, wheether you are a fan or not!

But what I'm saying is from what I have read besides the auction and buying things nothing else really appeals to me and so far nothing anyone has said has convinced me otherwise, my wife isn't even a fan so for her to go I have to first convinced I would enjoy it, If I want to read a book I can do that anytime. While it sounds like you for example enjoyed yourself at the IDWCon, nothing that you did is my cup of tea so to speak. o_O

Whilst I can see that meer is trying to be an ambassador for con, saying it's a family event because spouses can sit and wait in the bar doesn't really sell it I think! You'll know if you want to go, the descriptions of events are pretty good ;)

Well I went and took at look at the 2010 event programme and I can now say the cons out weigh the pros, the list of things that would entice me down to Birmingham is very small. Having read through the programme besides the book signings, the interviews with TP and others and the sellars and auction, nothing else interests me, some of the events makes me raise an eyebrow and go WTF, if I am perfectly honest

Thanks for those who gave their view and the person who pm'd a link to the last events programme, least I know now what goes off and know it ain't really for me. Will now need to find a reporter to cover the weekend for me
