Cor! Looks great!

I recently read the book and now have seen the first movie a couple of times and think they are doing an excellent job of adapting it.

Gandalf is always off (in the book) on some business of his own with no obvious explanation. I think that offers tremendous scope for enlarging the story and exploring Middle Earth without straying too far from the original story. I know there are a lot of critics of this adaptation, there were a lot of critics about LOTR, but I applaud Peter Jackson and co. for their efforts.

Thranduil! :romance-heartsthree: *swoons* (Legolas' Daddy!)!!!!!

Dunno who the red-haired elf lady is, but if they've made her a wood elf (like Legs and his dad) the ME canon nazis will be after Jackson's nads again  :p

But yeah - we're getting into territory where Gandalf's off-page excursions will come into it while Bilbo and the Dwarvesessss are off playing with Elvesessss and feckin' ginormous Spidersssss and we may get some of the backstory for Thorin's dad as well

PLUS!!!!! Beorn the Skin-changer as well (pity they aren't using Robbie Coltrane but never mind)! I think this one's going to be better than the first one, as there's a lot more action in it and it'll be nice to see the bits that weren't in the book (but are in the Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales) coming in - maybe more Radagast and his sled-pulling dire-bunnies too

Just looked up the redhead lady elf on wiki - yes, folks - Jackson will singing falsetto from now on... :eusa-violin:

Very few redheaded at all and they're all in the high-bred clans and not the lower caste woodfolk (who didn't head West as far as the Silmarillion Elfies) so strictly speaking Philipha Boyens the head scriptwriter is the one to blame for putting her in for positive gender discrimination reasons since JRRT never bothered putting in any ladies at all the book... :naughty:

Does any Discworld fan go to the length that they do, I may say that such and such was crap for a role but that's it, just my opinion and not rant and rave forever more about it, Jackson is putting a little bit more into the story to make it a little more interesting for the people who have never read the books but for me it does not detract from it in the least.

You should have heard them go on about the dire-bunnies! o_O  Plus 'dissing' Radagast whom Tolkien wrote about 3 lines or narrative about in the LOTR and only gave dialogue to Gandalf and Saruman for them to bitch him about later on.

This new elfess - Tauriel, is a complete invention of an unnamed captain of the woodfolk king's guard so at least they're not 'desecrating' the Great Man's every syllable, whether or not he changed his mind several times about them  Philippa Boyens isn't terribly popular in rarefied Tolkien academic circles, but she's dragging it into the 21st century with some of the script decisions and perhaps doing some embroidery that Tolkien might have got around to himself had he not faffed around so much. :snooty: He did actually have the concept, if not actually getting around to writing about it too much, for lady elves to be warriors in their youth (and onwards if they didn't want to breed) and for male elves like Elrond to opt out of the army to pursue lore, magic-wielding and healing as a career instead and I strongly suspect he'd have been very excited about the possibilities of CGI to bring Smaug and other nasssties to life. It's his po-faced editor son Christopher and the calcified die-hard pedantic fans that seem to think nothing at all should be changed and every word of dialogue remain unaltered

Sooooo agree! I miss the Piemaker.. :(
Ditto. :( But so glad he's in the movie! Didn't recognize him in the first one, but they didn't show much of him.
