Dear All: Need trustworthy info on the Librarian, for an article...

Like: does a list exist somewhere with all books where he's making an entrance? Or: which are the special ones, besides his gorgeous changing back and forth in THE LAST CONTINENT?

Are peanuts & bananas his only fruit/food ever mentioned?

How does L-Space work, exactly? Where can I read that?

And: what does HE like to read?

Ta!!!

Hi there Offlerette!!! and welcome to the forum.

I could suggest the New Discworld Companion, L-Space (the website) and the Discworld Wikis.

This, for example, is the L-Space definition of 'L-Space'.

The full L-Space website can be found HERE.

HERE'S the Discworld and Pratchett Wiki.

HERE'S the Discworld Wiki.

You should be able to find out all sorts about Dr Horace Worblehat, B.Thau., D.M. (aka The Librarian) there.

Hi Offlerette!!!

For me the best description of L-Space is in Science of Discworld II/

It seemed like he was in most Discworld books for ages, until his appearances became fewer.
I agree - he was almost like Death in that he was in so many of the books.

I am suprised, reading them in order as a first-timer, how both of their appearances dwindle. 3/4 of the way through Thud! at the moment and am glad the Special Constable got a brief scene with Pessimal.

Death is in most of the books. I think he's not in Wintersmith - or one of the Tiffany books and in at least one book he appears as an hallucination.

Thanks for the welcome, the websites, and the wee m*****, oh no, ape:))

Also the comparison between DEATH and the Librarian is interesting.

Am still unsure about his diet though: does he eat bananas at all???

Certainly he eats bananas and he's also been known to partake of beer with his peanuts in the Mended Drum.

I don't recall him eating anything else, but I'm sure he does. o_O

I can't remember which book it's in, but I understand he's also been known to visit the Patrician's private menagerie.

Sourcery

'Oh, have it your way,' Spelter sighed. But, somehow, he felt better for the conversation. Everyone else in the University seemed to be living in a dream, whereas the Librarian wanted nothing more in the whole world than soft fruit, a regular supply of index cards and the opportunity, every month or so, to hop over the wall of the Patrician's private menagerie*. It was strangely reassuring.

'So you're all right for bananas and so forth?' he inquired, after another pause.

'Oook.'

* No-one ever had the courage to ask him what he did there.

Death makes no appearance in Making Money (no one other than very minor characters die, and always offscreen), and I believe isn't in Monstrous Regiment, either (because no one with page time actually dies in the book). Come to think of it, he's not in UA, either, is he? (A Death scene with Andy would have been most satisfactory.)

Is he in at least one of the Tiffany books? I know he's not in WFM or ISWM, but in the latter doesn't Tiffany mention that she's met Death before, referring to something that happened in either of the two middle books?

Death is in Making Money and Monsterous Regiment, he is also in UA but only as a very short cameo. The only book where he does not appear is Wee Free Men.

Can you tell me where (and to whom) he appears in these books? I can't for the life of me find the scene in MM, I don't have MR (and don't remember any significant character dying). I also don't think he appears at all in ISWM; he's referred to, but not there. I think. Do correct me if I'm wrong.
