Re: The Pooh Pit - Sponsored by Coca-Cola

According to this Guardian story, Tokyo is the most expensive city in the world to live in. :eek:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2012/ju ... nsive-city

Utter bollux! :rolleyes:

It goes on to say;

"Tokyo has regained the dubious honour of being the world's most expensive city, where a cup of coffee will set you back £5.25, a newspaper £4 and a litre of milk £2."

I live an hour from Tokyo. I pay 3 quid for a Starbucks grande latte, an English newspaper is delivered to my house for less than a quid a day, and a litre of milk costs me 1.20. :rolleyes: :rolleyes: :rolleyes:

What's yer point? I live about a half hour from the city of Boston. Out here in my suburb, a cuppa Starbucks is a dollar cheaper, a gallon of milk is at least $2 cheaper, parking on the street is 25 cents hour vs. $1.00 in the city (or $9-$14 per hour in a parking lot), hotel costs are 30% cheaper than in the city, a six pack of Kirin is at least a dollar less, a Cosmopolitan at a local bar is at least $5 less, and tickets to a crappy movie are at least $2 cheaper. Yet, plenty of surveys say that Boston is one of the most expensive cities in the U.S., and I'll agree to that. Cities ain't suburbs. :laugh:

We are sorry if a minority of people don't like it but we are looking at the big picture (as it were).
Interesting choice of words. o_O o_O o_O

If you count up the total amount of posts by people who made comments pro sig images;

Pooh
Del
Pip
Jan
Batty
Tiff
DaveC
Raptorn

It comes to 47,604.

If you count up the total amount of posts by people who made comments anti sig images;

Jason
Tony
Toothy
Catch-up
Conforumist
Cheery j
Mungo
Bickaxe
=Tamar

It comes to 27, 272. (Of which 20,657 are Tony's posts!)

How on earth can it be said that the pro sigs are in the minority? o_O o_O o_O

Well - aside from the inflated figures :rolleyes: it seems it's 5.5 of one and 6.5 of another, so slightly in favour of the blanket ban. But you're right of course, 8 people posting to disagree (politely and rationally) with 9 isn't most people's idea of a minority... :|

This isn't a democracy of course but it's certainly very sad reflection on a community of this kind that a misunderstanding over the impact over over-egging sigs with animated GIFs that wasn't done maliciously in any way with no hostility involved has been treated far too heavy-handedly, especially since the offending images (and ones that weren't causing a problem) were removed almost as soon as Jason highlighted the problem it was causing some people? o_O

I also totally fail to see how
Jason said:
We'd like to point out that the option in the control panel for disabling signatures means that you lose them all - not just the animated ones so this really isn't a viable option.
is a problem in any way. :eek:

If you don't like to see sigs turn them off altogether - if you want to have them, stick to the code of conduct which everyone's prepared to abide by and which have now been defined and there's no sweat there either, with gentle prodding/persuasion on PM or whatever used by our excellent admin and mods when people step over the mark for whatever reason. Is that really going to cause everyone a headache when it can be remedied very simply by selecting or unchecking a radio button in your preferences? :rolleyes:

This is generally a fun and stimulating place to be and most of the time we don't need to be treated like we're at a kindergarten even if we're acting our shoe sizes and not our age - choice is always good surely and much better than applying hammers to walnuts? :laugh:

Although a worthy and justifiable campaign, pooh, I don't think it will work.

You are basing the proposal on the age old voting system of: one man, one vote.

The Mod is the man. He has the vote ... :rolleyes:
I just thougt my post was worth repeating ...

Democracy is dead. R.I.P. :angry-tappingfoot:

Re: The Pooh Pit - Sig Image Statistics

Frankly my feeling is if images were causing people so much trouble they should have known about the ability to disable them a long time ago.

Anyway, I removed the image i had when i saw the thread. not a problem and its not something I HAD to have. I'm sorry if people didn't like it, it wasn't my intention to cause offense, i thought it was cute and was sharing it, and probably would have changed or removed it at some point anyway. But I don't like how it has been and is continuing to be handled. a few people were having a little fun but it was getting out of hand so the mods stepped in, not a surprise, i knew it would happen,

BUT instead of sending PMs or making a post to the likes of "Hey maybe you should back off a bit" and everyone going "lol ok, ok, we'll let up", they go all big brother, impose a board wide ban, then when people are discussing it, rationally i might add, on all sides, they basically go, "I am The Law" and lock off the topic.

I responded to Jason's last post in that thread in the frustration thread so i won't repost it here. but this just went way to far for something so trivial.

To be honest, its those kinds of actions that are more likely to either push people away, or cause people to want to push their luck.

Re: The Pooh Pit - Sig Image Statistics

If I were Jason, I'd delete the "Images in signatures" thread before even more potential newbies are scared away. :cool:

If I were a newbie and read it, I'd be too scared to join. :eek: :eek: :eek:

It makes it appear as though this forum is run by an autocratic dictator, who acts arbitrarily, totally oblivious to the opinions and sensitivities of its members, in which discussion will not be tolerated, but quashed with the subtlety of a jackboot. :eek: :eek:

It's a good job that we all know this NOT to be the case, isn't it? :dance: :dance:

JAPAN IS THE MOST EXPENSIVE AND OVERRATED COUNTRY IN THE WORLD!

THERE'S ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG WITH PRODUCT PLACEMENTS IN BOOKS!

There. Now, Pooh, here are some alternative provocations you can go off about instead of ranting and raving about sigs and moderators. Fire away. :laugh: :laugh: :laugh:

Re: The Pooh Pit - Sig Image Statistics

You live in a fairy land J-I*b. :dance:

As I stated on the locked thread, we are merely marketing tools to increase the profits of Transworld publishers. :dance:
If you don't believe me, check out the inside back cover of the Dodger sampler. You'll see a photo of this forum there. :eek:

We pay our dues to this forum by posting interesting topics, which Transworld then go on to use for marketing purposes in order to sell more books. We are all basically corporate whores. And when Long Earth gets published this site's address will be printed in it. I know. I've got the proof. :cool:
This site is so successful that along with various media outlets, this site is mentioned under the heading "Marketing Campaign." :eek:

So from now on, even the slightest dissent will not be tolerated. :twisted:

This site is run by Transworld, for Transworld. It always has been, always will. The moderators are mere pawns. I don't believe they have full control anymore, so there's no point being angry at them. :dance:

And would Transworld publishers ever steal any thing posted here to use for their own profit without consulting the owner of that intellectual property? :eek:

Yes they would. They have already done it once to me, and will probably not think twice before doing it again. The theft was serious enough for me to be given a proof of ISWM at vastly reduced cost. :cool:

And just in case there are any Transworld employees reading this;

LONG EARTH IS WONDERFUL!

That should sell another few books for you! :twisted:
