Jan You must be mixing us up with the Yorkshire crowd, there is a difference between being canny and being mean. ;)
I wonder how that whole thrifty/mean Scot shtick got started, anyway?

Hang on...

*looks up things...*

According to TV Tropes, it originated in 18th-19th century England, due to the Act of Union. A bunch of Scots came down to make their fortune, and spendthrift was forever linked with the Scottish. And the English didn't see their own thriftiness. Now, say it with me...

My Aunt married a Yorkie, nice guy I got on well with him but one tight fisted person, and it has been my experience with a few more from that region it must be the rumor they put out to deflect it away from themselves.

Q - I'm feeling pretty depressed about this now as well but there is still time for a pleasant surprise...

The Rules said:
10. A shortlist of six entrants will be contacted by the Publisher by 31st March 2013. The publisher will select the winner from the shortlisted entrants and the winner will be announced by 31st May 2013.
...
14. The shortlisted entrants [and winner’s] names will be available on http://www.terrypratchett.co.uk from 31st March 2013 [and 31st May 2013] (as applicable).
So a few days to go for us although you'll have about 12 hours tacked on for having the sun rise earlier for you...
and I'll be mainlining the Easter chocs (and the G&T) if I'm still waiting on Saturday :shifty:

10 hours. I have to have my time set forward by ten hours ahead of GMT. Thanks for the concern, anyway.

Anyway, they may not be able to contact us, if we do get on the shortlist. They may have trouble selecting the shortlist. Six entrants out of...what? It was at least five hundred last time, wasn't it? The selection of the shortlist may very well be eleventh hour stuff. Even if the amount of entries may be lower, the quality overall might be higher, and thus, the decisions made might be more difficult.

And part of the problem with the deadline for this contest is that it is hard to do decent editing. Recently, my mother looked over my first completed draft and noted two main problems: a lot of cluster[EFF!] bombs, and that many of the characters get easily enraged. She enjoyed it, though, and keep in mind that she is not currently a regular science fiction reader.

Anyway, I have a new book idea, spurred on slightly by my purchase of Skyfall yesterday, although it is not a spy thriller. Have to develop it...

BTW, if you're gonna mainline anything, wouldn't chocolate icing powder be a better choice? You might get a chocolate stuck in your nose, otherwise. ;)

Hmmm, I've been keeping my eye on the inbox too, to no avail - I'm going to hold off mainlining anything through my nose however - the veins are too small  Still, good luck in the remaining hours guys

...Ugh, writer's block is upon me again. My brilliant new idea fell down at the first hurdle with two busted kneecaps and a fireside poker lodged in its head (with apologies to Ben Croshaw)...

And for those who've been following the blood sweat and tears  No champagne has been consumed in Cornwall or Brisbane today, but the 'good' news is that we're assuming that no one else has had cause to celebrate either because, if you can find the relevant page about the First Novel prize on the main site (HERE IT IS although Q & I have both been checking the Home, News and Extra pages too  ), because no announcements have been made as to who's made it onto the shortlist.

It's April 1st tomorrow so let's hope we'll at least know why we haven't heard a dickie bird by then if the shortlist goes up, 'cos it's the gin bottle that I'll be headed for next if they still haven't put the results up by then and we're all still left in limbo...

Thanks guys - still nothing on the site but I've just gone into the news archives and see that the last competition didn't have the announcements made until 1st April and 2nd June 2011 respectively (with the same advertised deadlines of 31st March and May) so hopefully we don't have too long to wait for it now... o_O

The website announcements, yes, but surely we should have heard something by email by now? If they delayed it due to the public holiday, something that they should have thought about when arranging the dates, well, I (for one) have been put through the wringer for no adequate reason.
