I have read all the books(sauce bottle, cornflake packet reader too) and honestly I find them worrying. IMHO they propose that girls should be passive. When Edward and whoever (can't even remember her name she is such a nonentity) do marry, the sex is portrayed as violent and that is supposed to be okay. She gets attacked, injured, threatened and that is supposed to be okay and suffers horrific pain when she is changed into a vampire (the point is made that she is somehow paralysed which should make the process painless but doesn't) and that is supposed to be okay.

Honestly I just don't think its healthy stuff for young girls or boys either for that matter.

Doesn't it? I read somewhere that boy lions were stronger than girls because they were meant to protect the pride and beat up other boys while the girls hunted.
Plus, Jacob is the pack's alpha male, which means that he has to be pretty strong and dominant.

I dunno...
They're both pretty civilized people.
I expect they'd have a little chat and then get on with life.

Noooooooooo,

Team Angel FTW, its the ultimate doomed love story.

A vampyre (thanks Andrew) in love with the slayer of vampyres.
But they cannot be together because if he experiences that one true moment of happiness he will lose his soul and turn into evil Vampyre Angelus.

Oh please... of all animals you pick lions?? I mean, male lions just lay in the sun all day, while the femals are hunting... they don't get much exercise doing that, don't they?
Ooooo - watch it! We've got experts on this on the forum  Male lions do hunt but they have other duties in which sexual dominance and territory figure highly. Lions are the only social big cat and in fact the single alpha male of the pride is not too accurate (even in Lion King Disney got that right because Mufasa and Scar were pride leaders together - although Musfasa was dominant he still tolerated Scar so they were both alpha males, dramatic plotlines not withstanding... :p ) and very often 2 or even 3 related males will club together and take over a pride and their first act will be to kill all the cubs by the last alpha to make the lioness come into season again. They don't want other lions kids.

Whilst the lionesses are resting or on the hunt the male(s) off patrolling the territory, scent marking and scratching and roaring occasionally to say 'this is mine not yours now bugger off'. Meal times whether or not he's brought down the meal he gets first dibs by right of protecting the females and his own cubs and none of the others get a look in until he's finished - cubs are allowed some leeway when very young, but they're soon cuffed into obediance. The full-grown male is massively bigger than the female, especially in forequarters and jaw which are around a third larger than the females. They specialise in hunting together and don't need the male for that - he can hunt for himself if he wants but otherwise he earns the right to be first in line because without him the lionesses would have to spend more time enforcing territory and their cubs would suffer in consequence. It's a social tradeoff that works well because a successful lion pack spends around 20 hours a day just resting and sleeping and getting a little sexual activity now and then...

Think about it. It's a bloody good deal for the females.

Lions can't afford feelings - ;)

Wolves are much the same only their social hierarchy's more complex as it centres more around the alpha female who is generally (but not always) the only female who will breed and so the whole pack are focussed on hunting and maintaining the terrirtory for her and her young. The male's wolf's strength is possibly even more important there, because he has to stay on top of all the other males so his genes are the ones that get perpetuated.

In humans, males tend to be physically stronger and taller etc than females because of these same dynamics, but being storytelling apes we've made it even more complex to the point where having muscles and being able to run fast are largely immaterial - but packs or herds are far more successful socially than singletons or even a single unsupported pairing (in an extended family/clan sense)... :p

From a post-feminist perspective Werewolves are looking more and more atttractive by the minute! 8)
