who would you want to be cast as His Grace, Sir Samuel Vimes, Duke of Ankh, Commander of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch IF they make a movie about a City watch book?

Someone who can pull it off and in a way looks the part.

Why do some people believe these roles always have to be filled with Hollywood actors?

i am with you on that one. it does not have to be a hollywood actor. just someone that fitts the character.

I always picture Robert Downey Jr as Sam Vimes. Having seen him play Sherlock, I'm convinced there could be no other!

On second thought, I wouldn't be too put off to see Hugh Laurie as Sam, although he is a bit lankier than I see Vimes in my imagination.

How about Carrot? Any nominations?

All good choices for Sam. But for some reason, as I read the books, I see Steve Carrell as Sam. Didn't happen until I read the part about Sam (literally) running home to be in time to read Sam Jr. his bedtime story, then Carrell just popped up. lol
