I don't know if this has been suggested or if the spelling is right ,but what about Hugh Jackman to play Vimes?

There actually is a technology that can make that appear to happen. It was (mis)used in some advertising when it was first invented.

I just looked through a pile of pictures of him, and I think they all look too innocent - a bit like a hobbit. Even when he is trying to be macho and mean. Vimes is a cynical old b****!

Jackman is about the right age,(44) but he looks too young and fresh faced to my mind.

Hi there,
Newbie here, first post!

The idea of who could play Vimes has been plaguing me for years. He seems to be one of these characters that is impossible for everyone to agree on. After much thought and consideration, the only person i can think of would maybe be a combination of Hugh Laurie and Liam Neeson. What do you think...?

But if I had to pick a real person, I think I would go for Hugh Laurie.

Hi Minn :) Good choice. But he's one of those people where half the viewers would be saying "ooh look, it's Bertie Wooster!" and the other half would be saying "isn't it ages since the last season of House was on?". If they could get an unknown who looks like Hugh Laurie, with a bit of Jack Dee's cynicism and Vinnie Jones' barely controlled fury, bob on.

Makeup can truly make a pretty face look gritty and careworn - look at Robert Downey Jr in the Sherlock Holmes movies. Having seen him as Holmes, I now cast him as Vimes in the cinema of my mind. I love Hugh Laurie, but I think he is too lanky. I always envisioned Vimes as not-too-tall but wiry. Is there any mention in the books of Sam's height?

I would have said Pete Postlethwaite myself, but sadly he passed away. He was a great actor, and would have been awesome for the role.
Maybe he could play Reg? ;)
Not only was he Terry's idea for the part, if you look in Where's my cow, the vines there is also based on Postlethwaite.

I'd sort of like to see Chris Ecclestone but I think he is a bit too tall. I've always imagined Vimes to be quite heavyset and he must be a Londoner. Reckon Ray Winstone if I have to choose, now for Nobby maybe Phil Daniels.

Welcome to the site, Minn! If they ever do get anyone to play Vimes in a TV show or movie, I'll bet any money that lots of fans won't be happy.

Well, call me whatever you like, but no... (add dripping distaste) AMERICAN.... should be allowed to play Vimes. I always pictured him as a northerner (yes, I am one, but that hardly influences me ;) )

That aside, if I were to pick someone on looks alone, I'd probably go for Michael Fassbender in 10 years

You bet we will!
I have no epithets for you, Sandman (well, maybe "chauvinist" suggests itself), but there is no earthly - or Discworldly - logical reason an American could not portray Sam Vimes brilliantly. Many British actors have portrayed Americans without American audiences crying foul. Daniel Day-Lewis (OK, I know he's Irish) played Abraham Lincoln, for crying out loud! My own first choice to play Vimes has portrayed Englishmen at least twice before.
. (Holmes and Chaplin) As an aside here--Renee Zellweger played Bridgit Jones so well that fellow actors who did not know her before refused to believe she was a Texan. And speaking of Texans - going further aside - have you seen Michael Caine in Secondhand Lions? He portrayed a "good ole boy" Texan flawlessly. And I am one Texan who can spot a phony drawl a mile off!
All in good fun, of course, Sandman.
