Read "The Hunger Games" today, the plot was gripping, the characters well drawn and the dystopian setting effortlessly pulled off, there was a bit at the end that seemed just a bit too ridiculous but it didn't mar what was a very satisfactory read.
I've looked at them a couple of times in shops trying to decide wether to try or not . I probably will at some point . We'll see

I'm getting my revenge on my reading group by giving them Surface Detail by Iain M. Banks  I think it's great, but it's scifi (which puts a lot of people off straight away), and it's about 600 pages. Considering half of them couldn't finish Huckleberry Finn (250 pages) in 5 weeks, I don't think any of them will manage this in only 3.

Dotsie, that is mean.
I am listening to Apassionata by Jilly Cooper. The cassette version audio book. I seem to be hooked on audio books at present.

Good call Dots. Point of a reading group is to expand your reading so Sci fi is fair game. Lazy sods need a kick from the sounds of it.

Looking forward to the film later this year, then? ;)
I don't know, I usually don't watch the films of books because I store up quite a lot of mental imagery and I find that pretty much gets wiped clean by seeing a film adaptation. I never went to see any of the Harry Potter films and it's nice that I'm one of the few people with a mental image of Harry that isn't Daniel Radcliffe.

I will go see The Hobbit though, Peter Jackson knows what he's doing.

I'll tell you if i think they're worth getting into once I've read the next two, apparently the third isn't as good but we'll see.

They couldn't finish a 250 page book in 5 weeks? I think I polished off Huck in an afternoon, I don't understand people who can't find time to read, they'll say they don't have time but you'll notice that they always find a couple of spare hours for watching television.

Meheheh, if you want to be really evil, give them Banks' The Algebraist  That'll keep 'em quiet for a while.

I have just finished Embassytown by China Mieville (Dotsie, if you haven't read him, do, you might like him), which was marvellous! Currently started The Book Thief again, which I had put down some time ago when I acquired some new Pratchetts. So, back to that.

I loved the Algebraist, but the rule is the books have to be in the library, and SD one was the only one that had enough copies (I'd rather buy a book than be subjected to a free copy of a misery-fest, but I seem to be alone in that).

I tried reading Kraken by Mieville, wasn't really getting into it because I thought the main characters were tits, but I might try again with Embassytown

Dotsie, have you read the latest Stephanie Plum book yet? I'm halfway through it now...it's like snuggling up in an old warm blanket...comfortable, predictable, undemanding and quite satisfying.
