Just finished Charlaine Harris's Sweet and deadly and I found it very good

I've put Peony in love by Lisa See in my handbag ready to re-read again on the bus to work

I just yesterday finished the final volume of Monster, the psychological thriller series by Naoki Urasawa.

In a word? Brilliant. It's a bloody good story, one that Guillermo del Toro is intending to adapt for a TV series. Great story, great ending, with only one minor loose plot thread left hanging.

Many of the volumes are out of print (the sixth volume went out of print shortly after I ordered the damn thing), and I had to borrow them from a library, but apparently they're going to start reissuing them next year...

How Carrots Won the Trojan War: Curious (but True) Stories of Common Vegetables, by Rebecca Rupp. nonfiction. Oddly fascinating. p.219: an 18th century story of a French caterer who had hungry customers and no main dish, so he shredded a pair of water-buffalo leather gloves and simmered them with onions, mustard, and vinegar. And got away with it. No mud, though.

Reading Dust by Hugh Howey. Its the last part in a post apocalyptic trilogy called the Silo Series. If you haven't tried it get the first part - Wool.
Books are great

I'm about to start reading Battle Royale, something I've been promising myself for ages after watching the films.
Loved the two films (even the weird rugby stuff in 2) books were ok.

the manga or the book
because I read the book about 4 years ago and your in for a long slog
The book. I'm afraid I don't do manga.
If you do read one manga series, I suggest Monster. Think Silence of the Lambs meets The Fugitive. It's debatably the best manga series ever. Hell, even Guillermo del Toro is trying to do a live action TV version.

I tried to watch the anime and I couldn't get past 7 episodes it's was good but it's a lot to take in
Well, if you only made it to seven episodes, you've only done about the equivalent of two of the eighteen volumes. You learn fairly early on (in the 11th episode) what caused Johan to turn out the way he did...or you think you do. And you're missing out on the introduction of Wolfgang Grimmer, who is one of the more enjoyable characters of the series.

I only got back onto it recently because, long story short, I ordered the manga volumes through a bookshop, but volume 6 went out of print just as I ordered the damn thing, and I've been stuck with volumes 1-5 and 7, unable to go any further. Thankfully, the libraries at Brisbane have them, and after a couple of years' hiatus, I read the rest of the series in a big marathon.

It's...sheer brilliance, and I don't say that lightly.

Now reading a couple of paranormal mysteries by Stuart Jaffe: Southern Bound (#1) and Southern Charm (#2). Not quite noir, but there's a rich family or two who control the small North Carolina town the heroes are in. They're good page-turners. I noticed some typos but not enough to spoil the books for me.
