In Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, the pirate has a parrot that says "pieces of eight". Reacher Gilt's parrot says "twelve and a half percent", which should tell everyone else that he's really a pirate. He's mocking people to their faces!
Really? Now it makes sense  years ago i read Treasure island, of course, but my book was "l'isola del tesoro", the italian version, so it was different.

Thank you. Thank you.
A 'Piece of Eight' is actually a Spanish Dollar worth 8 Reales. ;)

So, the parrot from Treasure Island saying 'Pieces of eight' was speaking of real money. I've seen the silver coin in the wikipedia page in your link. This information only makes me happy that i joined this forum. Thank you, I really couldn't understand what Moist was so excited about. o_O Now that i understand the joke, it's quite brilliant. If I didn't already loved the way he writes, I would fall in love now.

Did you know that"Twelve and a half percent" is an eighth of 100 - A piece of eight? ;)
I know you wrote this a long time ago, but i'm relatively knew here. So, what does that mean? I didn't understand it in the book, and i'm not getting it now... :(
Oh Egads one minute I am remembering everything and the next my brain goes WONK... Pieces of Eight are Spanish money pieces from the 16th or 17th centuries, there were 8 of them to a "dollar" and the reference is to a Parrot (Pirate's accompaniment on shoulder) who would normally say "Pieces of Eight" because of the whole Pirate Booty/Treasure thing.

References are all over about them in undersea treasure hunter stuff.

12 1/2% is one-eighth of a dollar and that is what Reacher Gilt's parrot kept saying in "Going Postal" ... Gee, imagine Terry using a pun/play on words

post-script thingy: feel free to amend this with the proper time period as I am still sort of in mid-WONK  i.e. children calling, ordering paintballs, husband in and out of door every 50 to 70 seconds with firewood and MENOPAUSE-ish stuff... hehehe 48 is a wonderful age, all you young'uns will have a BLAST once your body says "Genetically, you are no longer useful so, Push Off."

Happy to help!

And if there's any other references you are not sure of, please feel free to ask. ;)

Nope. It's called Sookie Stackhouse: The Complete Stories, A Touch of Dead. Turns out it's the short stories that were originally in other collections, one of which I think was Wolfsbane and Mistletoe? Is that the one you're thinking of? Anyway, looks like I've read all of them already, so I'll have to take this one back.
