I've literally just started The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. Can anyone sell me the dream of this series before I throw myself down a 13 book marathon? Without spoilers though!
It severely drags so once you get past the first 3 books be prepared for snail pacing. There's also a lot of spanking for some reason, polygamy and the girls are unreasonably beautiful. I dropped it after a while because from the spoilers it sounded like it only got worse not better

It's an interesting world with interesting characters and interesting concepts. Alas it's handled so poorly but this is all just my opinion in the end.

I'll persevere and see how it goes. My boyfriend is on book 3 and says it's brilliant so far, so I've just started. If it really is a trial I'll give it up but I don't do that lightly, I'm far too curious. I actually finished the Wishsong of Shannara, possibly the worst in the series. I finished it because I enjoyed the others books and wanted the continuity.

Outside of Terry I don't read a great deal of fiction (OK all of Robert Rankin, Jasper fforde and Tom Holt!!)

Every Christmas my wish list only ever contains books and this year I got 9 of them!! I've been powering through them and have read some very good non-fiction.

Is This The Real Life - The Story Of Queen (mark Blake). I read nearly all pop and rock biographies and have read at least half a dozen on Freddie & Queen. This one is exceptionally well written and has a lot of first hand encounters with the band. Highly recommended

The Elephant to Hollywood The second autobiography from Michael Caine and another exceptionally good read. It picks up from where he left off in in Whats It All About which he wrote 18 years ago. It takes you right up to his retirement in 2010. A really interesting read.

The Fry Chronicles autobiography of Stephen Fry. Like Michael Caines book, this picks up from his first a/biog Moab Is My Washpot and goes through to when he was filming his pilot for A Bit Of Fry And Laurie. I like Fry's style of writing very much but I am first to admit he very much is an aquired tast. If you love the UK scene of the 60's & 70's you'll love this.

Life. Yet another autobiography this time from the Rolling Stones infamous guitar player Keith Richards. I'm pretty sure that this was ghost written as it seems inconceivable that a man you can hardly string five words together without losing his place could possibly write a book as big as this. It's an OK book and has it's moments but not a "great"
book

I really must highly recommend to you Bill Bryson. During my writing of the three part article on the History Of New Zealand (see broken drum thread) I dipped into his book Down Under to get some info I needed. I started about a dozen pages in and couldn't put it down (again! I've already read it twice) I have got to say that he is the only other author outside of Terry than makes me cry with laughter. I cannot recommend this book to you more. It is absolutely incredible writing. Try it!

Try Walter Moers. Start with "The City of Dreaming Books". That should make you laugh too. You will love his illustrations too; Moers started out as a comic artist before deciding to write novels.

One of my fav's Wolfy. I must have read it three times over the years and have loved it on all occasions. Apparently there is a movie of it out there somewhere though I have never seen it. I really like Neil Gaiman too.

The movie is actually a four-part TV show - and it hasn't been made yet. ;)
