I agree wholeheartedly with all of the love for Kung Fu Panda. A traditional Kung Fu story, cunningly disguised as wholesome family fare; right down to the Furious Five using the traditional styles of the animals they were depicted as. Awesome film. :)

I finally got around to watching Watchmen, the other day. Pretty good, but so close to being mind-blowingly brilliant that I still felt sort of let down by it for not quite pulling it off. I'm just hard to please, I suppose.

Anyone wanting to see the superhero ideal deconstructed would be better off watching The Incredibles, which has much better pacing, heart warming sentiment without being sentimental, good gags and the never underestimated bonus of not seeing Doctor Manhattan's fluorescent blue wing-wang floating around the screen like the lightsaber of your worst nightmares.

I agree about the Incredibles, and also about the glowing blue dangly nasties. Who needs that I ask you?

I watched Inglorious Baskets, which was fairly horrible in places (had to look away), but an interesting story. Not the first time a director has changed the facts, but this time (I hope) no-one will fall for it. Then we watched Land of the Lost, which was funnier than I would like to admit

Just started watching the first series of True Blood. Picked up the set from the library. I was very reluctant, because I love the books. I'm now several episodes in and while it took some getting used to at first, I really like it now!
I've only seen the first few episodes of True Blood, but I'm liking it as long as I pretend it has nothing to do with the books :p
Now that I've gotten through the whole season, I think that's the most sensible approach.

OMG! That made me laugh out loud! Wasn't that crazy about Watchmen.

We recently cancelled our cable service, with no plans to replace it with another service. Joined Netflix instead and this is what we've seen so far:

A Christmas Story - almost as funny as I remember it.
Land of the Lost - Unbelievably silly, and like Dotsie I laughed more than I'd like to admit.
The International - wasn't very impressed.
The Hangover - laughed non-stop!!!

Up next: The Taking of Pelham 123 - not expecting it to be fantastic.

At the movies:

The Princess and The Frog - loved it!! It lived up to all the glowing reviews, very sweet, funny and a fantastic soundtrack.

I almost forgot I wanted to ask here, about new movies?
First: has anyone seen Avatar yet? what did you think?

Second: has anyone seen Hackiko yet?? If yes, then I would ask for a little favour.... I can't watch it if I don't know before what happens to the dog. Please can anyone tell me what happens to him in the end? I know I shouldn't ask for movie finals, it's usually a not-to-do thing, but I must know, absolutely, because if I know nothing, I go watching it, and in the end they tell me the cute dog stayed all his life waiting for a man that never came and died of pain I won't stand it.... :(

CrysaniaMajere I went to see that on Tuesday afternoon in 3D at the Imax cinema I thought as a visual film it was stunning, predictable film plot but I dont care the 3 hours it was on just flashed by it deserves all the oscars it's going to get and its on track to break all box office records.  I know what film I will be voting for at next years Worldcon. 8)

Just watched District 9 on DVD. Good, thought provoking, intelligent sci-fi that relied more on plot than CGI. I lived for just over seven years in South Africa during it's transition to a democratic country, free from apartheid and discrimination, so the subject matter was even more poignant. I reckon that several oscars will be heading in its direction.

I thought it was good too, but I'm not so sure about the oscars. Seems to me it will be a that a film about aliens that don't land in America won't be too popular. I don't think this will be the token low-budget film this year o_O

I started watching District 9 on the plane coming back from Tucson, but wasn't really in the mood for what was obviously quite a serious film. It actually put me in mind (what I did see)of PJ's earlier work such as Brain Dead and Bad Taste. Bearing in mind that I only saw a relatively short bit, I found the humour somewhat Black and I really was in a black enough mood myself at the time. One to watch later I think. :)

Watched The Taking of Pelham 123. Well, I didn't fall asleep or turn it off early. It was good for what it was, but not great. Wouldn't bother to recommend it to anyone.

Still catching up seeing some movies, recently I saw:

Avatar - the amazing visuals make up for a predictable story. Time really flew by. Amazing CGI, first 3D-movie for me leaves me wanting more.

At home, I saw 500 Days of Summer. Sort of a romantic comedy, but a very untraditional one. Good one to watch with the wife :)
I also managed to get her to watch the new Star Trek movie (I promised her we'd switch to something else if she didn't like it after 15 minutes). She actually quite enjoyed it. It's a good romp with some unfortunate choices in story, but my inner geek forgives all.
From 2009, I mostly remember District 9 - powerful stuff. Inglorious Basterds, especially the opening scene. Zombieland - plain fun.

Will probably see Sherlock Holmes this weekend, looks like good turn-your-brain-off fun.
