I saw The Shawshank Redemption yesterday. It's the first on the IMDb top 250 list, and although it wasn't bad at all (actually, it was a very good movie), I wouldn't say that it's world's best... The acknowledgement should actually go to Stephen King, who wrote the novel.
Don't misunderstand me, it's a great movie - the actors are doing a very good job, nothing wrong with the screenplay, and the soundtrack is OK (although there could have been a bit more of it ;) ) - but to say that this IS the best movie in the world... I don't know...

I am not sure i agree with you on the acknowledgement going to Stephen King, having read the novella, i would say this is one of the only occasions where the film is better than the book. Also see The Mist, another Stephen King adaption by the same director i believe this is also superior to the source story. It also has one of my favourite endings of any film, because the director didnt let Hollywood change it.

Didn't know that... what was the original ending like?
It was more elliptical, if memory serves.

I saw Please Give at my local picturehouse today - imagine, if you will, Mike Leigh being a New Yorker and you will have a good idea of style of it. Good effort, with the wonderful Catherine Keener.

Yesterday, I've seen Julie and Julia. It was... nice. No, really, it made me laugh sometimes, and the plot was all right, and Meryl Streep acted brilliantly (although sometimes she was more like Hyacinth Bucket (sorry, Bouquet  ), and that was awfull, but most of the time it was kind of charming... ;) ).
It's a nice movie, but I wouldn't put it even in my top 30, I think...

You might try looking on YouTube for Julia Child videos such as this one. Meryl was only acting the same way that the real Julia did.

Yep - she's brill is Meryl.

Haven't seen Julia & Julia so will have to put that on my list. That clip's brilliant, but I wanted to close my eyes when she came into view - I was having a vision of Frank Oz doing one of the Muppets before I saw and it completely shattered the illusion! :x

The Imanginarium of Doctor Parnassus. It was... I won't say weird, because that has a negative message, but it was... let's say it was special. There were parts I liked, but mostly I got a bit confused... I didn't know where we were and why... but it was great acting work, and considering that they had difficulties because of Heath Ledger's death ( ), I can say they've done great job. I like the soundtrack of it (beautiful!!!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAyA...0F2DA4A6D&playnext_from=PL&index=0&playnext=1
