I like aussie movies, they are usually more real lifelike than us films.
One of my 'Top 10 movies of all time' is the Aussie film "The Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith," shot by one of my favorite auteurs, downunda director Fred Schepisi.

As for Crocodile Dundee...no comment

Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith is a brilliant movie.

So is Rabbit Proof Fence. You would like that one too. Its REALLY true to life. I rememeber the black cars as a child when I lived out west. Such a sad chapter in our history. Thing is... the stolen children didn't just happen to aborigines... it happened to whites as well... though thats not so well documented. My father and his baby brother were put in one of the homes until they were 16. Thier mother went to the catholic church for help when her husband walked out. They just leaned over and took her children.

And one of the latest is an adaptation of a stage play written by a school teacher in Broome... Bran Nue Day... its like Priscilla Queen of the Desert but aboriginal... great movie.

Add me to the list of people praising Rabbit Proof Fence. In fact, add me to the list of people saying Australian cinema needs wider exposure. As well as Rabbit Proof Fence, there's The Proposition, The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith, Breaker Morant, Gallipoli, Mad Max, Lantana, Chopper, The Cars that Ate Paris, Dead Calm, Murielle's Wedding and The Castle to name only a tiny number of excellent films.

Keeping with the Antipodean theme, don't discount New Zealand as a film making country, either. Heavenly Creatures, Once Were Warriors and Whale Rider are three outstanding films which more people should watch.

When it comes to New Zealand, don't forget Eagle Vs Shark! :) ( and Flight of the Concords)
also Peter Jackson's 'before Hollywood' catalogue, Bad Taste, Meet the Feebles, Braindead and Forgotten Silver. Love Heavenly Creatures, the odd one out in his filmography until he did The Lovely Bones.

I enjoyed Crocodile Dundee! I even saw it twice ...

If you want to discuss Australian films, then how could you forget an Australian Icon? ...

W e actually had pet kangaroos as kids... we didn't have TV for the majority of my childhood as we were too far west to get reception but when we DID finally see Skippy... we had NO idea what they were going on about that sound he/she made... the "tsk tsk tsk" sound... kangaroos don't MAKE that sound

An yes I agree... NZ makes some amazing movies.... the Aussie movies and the NZ movies that get noticed make me think of the UK movies that we come to love.... like that one abut the guys who learn to strip (?) and the one about the brass band. (?) But then you HAVE to love a movie with a good story huh? Oh yeah and that movie about the villiagers who made a hill a mountian... (?)
