My friend & I are about to watch, The Golden Compass.
I loved this movie, I wasn't ready for it to end though and although I've heard there'll be more I haven't heard of any in production

I don't know too much about Hornblower and although Ioan Gryffyd does a good job I'm afraid for me that ole sea dog is eternally Gregory Peck!
I have however read a Hornblower book - the same one as the Peck film (or a part of it). I forget the name but I was about 12 and I think had a really bad bout of bronchitis... Anyway it must have been pretty good to keep my attention so well and helped me on with yet another literary fetish for historical novels as well as made-up ones :p

I've read one as well - a long time ago. It was about Nelson's funeral.

Actually, I'm currently working my way through the Patrick O'Brien books. Those are great - and surprisingly funny too.

We've watched the new Indy movie - not too bad, but definitely not as good as the 1st and the 3rd (thought the Temple of Doom was pretty bad).

And Hancock - enjoyed it more than I thought I would, but I understand why a lot of people have said that it could have been better. I think the focus was more on the comedy and the action, rather than filling out the story. It was good for what it was.

They were supposed to be making films of all Philip Pullman's Dark Materials series. I found this extract from Wikipedia.........

In March 2008, The Golden Compass Producer Deborah Forte expressed optimism that sequels could be made, and said that she intended to see them realized, but the studio decided not to make them. In December 2008, The Independent noted that a risky economic climate may have contributed to the non-production of further films, as "wider film industry is expecting to tighten its belt in 2009."

Such a shame, but the books can be read. I have read all the series now. Do read them, Cols, they are excellent.

Saw Slumdog millionaire yesterday. Very good film, a bit dark if it hadn't been for the millionaire theme. (I really have to stop watching films where people are mean to children, I get extremely bloodthirsty :x )

I watched the original 1954 version of Godzilla last night. It's strange how Godzilla movies have almost become comedies as this one certainly wasn't. After all, it was less than a decade after the Nagasaki and Hiroshima bombs. The fact that Godzilla was disturbed by nuclear testing and that he's radioactive speak volumes for the fears of the Japanese people at the time.

Apparently the idea for the movie was made up pretty much on the spur of the moment as the original movie that was going to be made fell apart. One of the crew mentioned the fact that a Japanese boat had got too near a nuclear test and the crew had died horribly from radiation. This is sort of what the first scene is based around. :)

Good movie!

I like Johnny Depp but everytime he tried to look excentric I thought he looked really creepy.

I prefered the original Willie Wonker too. Though I do like Johnny Depp as a pirate.
Watched Enchanted a few days ago. That is a fun film.

I just watched Death of a Salesman, based on the Arthur Miller play. This wasn't the 1951 movie but the 1985 one with Dustin Hoffman as Willie Lomon and John Malkovich as his son, Biff.

It's a really good movie with excellent performances especially from Malkovich and Kate Reid, who plays the wife - but what is it with Dustin Hoffman? He always overacts and spoils it. I'm not a great fan of his at all. He's either really good or annoying as hell.

He was only in his forties when he made this movie and it took several hours to make him look in his sixties. Why? There were plenty of actors of the right age who would have been fantastic in the role. But because Hoffman is playing an older person he has to ham it up and act like he's in his ninties rather than his sixties. It beats me why of earth he was cast in the role in the first place.

I agree with Tony re Willy Wonka. He's supposed to be creepy, that's why it's so good!

BTW have always thought Dustin Hoffman was a tool (less sophisticated than Tony's assesment, I know). I also don't like Jack Nicholson. He could be good, but the only parts he plays now are... Jack Nicholson o_O
