So, I've recently been successful in convincing my friend to try the Discworld books (she's a bit apprehensive about most fantasy) and I'm wondering which one I should give to her. Keep in mind that I don't have Maskerade, Unseen Academicals, Sourcery, Moving Pictures and most of the Tiffany Aching series.

On a related note, what was your first Discworld book? Mine was Color of Magic.

Wyrd Sisters, i've yet to encounter anyone who can resist the sheer hilarity of it. Mine was Mort.

I always recommend starting with Guards! Guards! as it's a great introduction to the city (through the eyes of Carrot) and goes a great way to explain how things work in AM. Being the first book in the Watch series is also a good thing. ;)

Colour of Magic was my first DW book as well. My brother nagged me into reading it and I've read them all as they came out since then.

I like pointing people to the reading order guide on L-Space
http://www.lspace.org/books/reading-ord ... index.html

Although I try and find out what the person likes to make a recommendation:

Do they like Shakespeare? Wyrd Sisters and Lords and Ladies
Do they like Police Procedurals or Murder Mysteries? Guards! Guards! and the rest of the Watch books
Do they like movies? Moving Pictures
Music? Soul Music
Muscial Theatre? Maskerade

Other good starting books are Mort, The Truth, Wee Free Men and Going Postal.

I wouldn't recommend anyone to start with The Colour of Magic unless they are already determined to read them all, or they already read a lot of fantasy novels (including many of the classics from the 50s-70s)
